5 1/2 " Blackhawk bullet mold recommendation 44 mag
« on: February 29, 2008, 05:57:59 AM »
I'm looking for plain base bullet recommendations for a 5 1/2" Blackhawk in 44 mag.  The purpose is a carry gun and general shooting and close range hunting for deer sized game.  I have a Super Redhawk if I want maximum power or velocity so that is not the purpose.  I'm looking for good balance of power and velocity verses the recoil in the 5 1/2" Blackhawk.  Oh, accuracy would be nice also given a proper fit.

My intent is to get a mold and will go custom if that is the best option.

Believe it or not.....

When I had my 5 1/2" SBH I used Lee C429-240 SWC gas Check bullet with excellent results. The RCBS 44-245 SWC plain base also is really good, at least for me.

If your looking for a mid range light recoiling load im sure your looking at 250 grain bullets. In then my two favorites are the rcbs 250kt and the rcbs 240 swcgc. the 240 is on of the most accurate all around 44 bullets ive found but your going to need to deal with gas checks and i dont know if thats something you want.

My 4 5/8 SBH likes the Lyman 429421 SWC cast from wheel weights.  It is listed as 245 grains but weighed, resized and lubed, it is just a hair over 250 grains.  I have loaded it in .44 spec cases as well as full snort .44 mag and it is quiet accurate in both my 4 5/8 and Bisley 7 1/2.  I have taken a couple of whitetails and a few hogs with it.

Does anybody have both the Lyman and the Rcbs 245 swc?  What's the difference in bearing surface and lube groove?

ive got both. the lyman probably has a tad more bearing surface but neither have been tack driver for me. If i had to pick one of those two it would be the rcbs.
