Problem with New England 243 Handi Rifle
« on: February 24, 2008, 12:46:19 PM »
My son bought a used rifle from Gander Mountain a couple of weeks ago.  The rifle looks good and the store assured us it had been checked over and test fired.  We took it to the range for the first time today and discovered that when fired it unlatches and fails to eject the case.  We tried it twice and had the same result both times.  I can't take it back until Tuesday, Any suggestions on things we could check.

See Pop Open medicine in the FAQs and Help sticky, most rifles made since 2005 have extractors, not ejectors, the spent case must be removed manually, that's the only way they make centerfire rifles now, with some exceptions of some older accessory barrels.

Read the info on Chamber Polishing in the FAQs, that's one reason why they don't make ejectors any more. :-\

Ok, the locking lug did have lots of grease on it.  Also the chamber is very rough and the ejector arm is occasionally sticking in the barrel assembly.

Sounds like a good cleaning will cure most of the problems , fallow that with a chamber polishing with Fultz and you'll be good to go .

There's ejector R&R info in the permanent conversion to extractor links in the FAQs too, tells how to disassemble the ejector parts.

Had the same problem with my 243.  I bought it new in a combo set-up with a 50 cal Huntsman.  It required a LOT of cleaning and polishing.  It works great now.
