"pointed" bullets in 45-70
« on: February 24, 2008, 07:05:01 AM »
Hello,

I was wondering if you guys use the barnes 300 grain pointed tsx in any of your single shot 45-70's.  Also, for those of you who have done this, is there an oal that seems to work the best? Any help would be great! Just started loading for this cartridge.

thanks,
vanbuzen9

Van, I don't shoot many jacketed bullets thru my 45-70's. I do shoot some POINTED cast bullets in them. The bullet is from an NEI 405 grain gas checked mold I have had for many years. YOUR rifles chamber will tell you what OAL it likes. Handi rifles usually have a short chamber. T/C chambers are not always the best and can be quite long. A little more info on the fire arm and intended use MIGHT get more interest.

I would recommend you call or email Ty Herring at Barnes for data/info pertainent to your rifle since that bullet isn't available yet that I've seen. ;) Since they don't list it with the 45-70 bullets, it's probably made for 458 Winmag velocities and higher, the 300gr XFB isn't listed for the 45-70 in the #3 manual.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, the overall length isn't what you need to be concerned about, to a point.  What is critical is the amount of bullet taking up case space.   Too deeply and you can increase pressure dramatically.  With a pointed bullet, I'd seat as far forward as I could and still keep one caliber in the case.  Your limiting factor will be the ogive, not the tip of the bullet.  The further out, the less pressure you'll get. Try about 0.003 short of the rifling.   You can even seat to where it's just touching the rifling but be aware that if too far forward the bullet may "pull" if extracting an unfired round.

This is for a TC encore.  It sounds like to much hassle to get the correct information to safely shoot this bullet.  I'll probably just stick to the good old flatpoints.

thanks,

I was curious myself, so I already emailed Ty for data for both the 300gr and 350gr TSX, I'll share what I find out. I've emailed him several times before, usually I get .pdf data sheets, but I've also got recommendations for using the X-bullet data in the #3 manual if they don't have data.

quickdtoo,

that would be great if you could post your findings if you get a reply.  I bet the pointed TSX's would perform pretty good out of the 45-70.  Now, if only they were around a buck a piece........

Midsouth has the TSX now..

Midsouth has a better price on the LE ammo, but I wouldn't buy it unless I knew it was the 2050fps ammo.

Another pointed choice that's made for Ruger level loads is the 300gr and 400gr SSP Original, Grafs doesn't show the actual pic of the bullet tho, Midway has a good pic, but no stock.

I shoot the Barnes Original 300 grain spitzer, Quick posted a link, out of my Handi with 55 grains of IMR 4198. I shot a 175# real old 6 point in Miss. at 35 yards, Bang/Flop. I'm pushing the bullet a little hard for that distance, but I have it set up for a powerline that I hunt average shot distance 160-250 yards. Mine drops about 9 1/4" at 250.

Edit: The one from Midway not Grafs (picture)

Wow, I didn't know that about hornady, but considereing they have one of the best ballistian/engineer/rocket scientist(no joke) out there, (Dave Emery) I'm sure they will fix the problem.  That original barnes bullet looks like it might work, I might give it a try.  It also seems like everyone who shoots the 45-70 favors H4198/IMR4198.  It does show the highest velocities in my hornady reloading manual.

Vince,  what oal are you using with the original barnes bullet?

Thanks everyone for all the good info.

I got a reply from Barnes, they recommend using the #3 manual info which they sent me in .pdf form, but only for Ruger level, no levergun which I asked for too.
