Gas Check 'Boolits'

What are the criteria for needing gas checks on LC bullets? Something to do with velocity I suppose. Are there any rules of thumb?

If you are going to push cast bullets over 1600fps nominally, gas checks are pretty much necessary. They prevent leading and can clean lead out of a barrel.

True if you are using mostly softer lead (i.e. what you'd probably want for a hunting load).  A harder bullet (heat treated/more linotype content) could get you faster without the GC.  Alot depends on the pressure you are loading to & the hardness of the boolit, if the bullet fits the bore diameter.
