I need some Beretta 92FS advice.
« on: May 06, 2008, 10:24:22 AM »
I used to have a stainless beretta 92FS back in the day when they all had a steel guide rod underneath the barrel.  Is the plastic guide rod really an improvement?  I really liked the gun, but I wasn't a good shot with it at all.

I'd like to buy one just to remember the good old army days, but geesh those are getting expensive.  I've seen the commemorative service models and they sure are nice, but I'd rather have something I don't have to worry about when I touch it.  I saw a used OD Green Beretta 92 and it seemed like it was going for a good price at under $500.  It didn't look like it had hardly been shot and was wondering what you all thought about something like that.  Is that a good price?

I'd rather find one of the ones that was chambered in 45acp, so I wouldn't have to get all the reloading supplies, but I've heard those are nearly impossible to find.

These prices are Houston prices.  I just picked up 2 92FS.  The first was pristine.  Only came with a 10 round mag, plastic guide rod and it was $455 OTD.  The next one that came up was scratched and used with a metal guide rod and 1-15rd mag for $355 OTD.  This is the best price I had seen so I jumped on it.  Average internet price I'd say was $450-ish for a used gun in good to excellent condition + tax + shipping.  NIB are $500 and up.

FWIW, I am not that good a shot with this model either.  Most of my practice is with 1911s.  I picked it up for the wife and she is not impressed.  Back to the selection...

Well I normally like to shoot 45's, just because I like that the cartridge has a good track record.  I started thinking about a 9mm again just because the ammo is so much cheaper.  I do my own reloading, but even the component prices are getting too high.  It's a tough choice on buying the green one because it's a decent price for such a good looking pistol.

I think Beretta is list pricing the 92FS Inox at $700.  I was going to sell mine for $500 in like new condition but decided to keep it instead. I have small hands and they don't like double stack magazined pistols but once the first round goes off, the trigger is easy to reach and it feels fairly comfortable.  If the green Beretta catches your eye and you can afford it, go for it.
