New member & new rifle
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:00:34 PM »
Hey all. My first gun was an H&R 088 20 ga. Got it as a gift 22 years ago and I still use it. I've been wanting a Handi-Rifle for years and finally bought one in .270 win. Cant wait to see what it will do at the range and in the woods next season. Glad to be part of a great site!

Thanks all! I was hoping I would find a site like this. I knew there had to be others that shared an interest in H&Rs. And yes, I'm already thinking about my next purchase. Its going to be either a .17 or 22-250. Leaning more towards the 250 right now.

Just buy the barrel.  You can't beat another rifle for 87 bucks.  Throw a scope on it and you're set. The wind never stops blowing here, or so it seems.  I nice day is 10 - 20 mph.  That's why I chose the .22-250.  I think the .17 would drift around too much, plus the 250 has more down range punch.

It's hard to beat the 22-250. I have M700 in 22-250 with a heavy barrel and it is a shooter. Great in the wind.

Thanks guys! 22-250 it will be. Liked the round since I shot my friends T/C Encore chambered for it. petemi, I'm in Iowa and the winds blow the same pretty much all the time. What is the turnaround on getting a barrel back from H&R?

I just bought my first one too. Picked it up 2 days ago. There's alot of excellent information on this site. I can see where these guns can become a major little hobby. Dave

Right now it runs about 6 - 8 weeks.  I just sent for 3 barrels.  I imagine waiting for your rifle to get back must be something like being pregnant.  Seems to take forever.  You might have 30 other rifles, but you're always looking for the one that's gone off to NEF.  I really don't know why it takes that long, but it does.  Call first and make sure they have the barrel you want before you send for it.  Go to h&r1871.com, customer service, accessory barrel program for the barrel catalog, prices, and ordering instructions.
