sidekick questions
« on: March 19, 2008, 01:36:22 PM »
hi all,i have been a long time watcher ,now im a registered user.i own two of these nef rifles (12ga pardner, bran new sidekick that i recieved yesterday).im hoping the sidekick will be as good to as the pardner has.just cleaned my sidekick today.are they known for not cleaning them very well at the factory after test fireing.mine was pretty dirty in the bore.other than the dirty bore the gun looks great.my other question is i want to teach my 10yr to hunt with this gun.is there a youth stock that will fit on this, what would be lowest powder charge that i could use for deer to about 50yd an still kill cleanly.is the williams peep worth the extra money over the stock rear sight.i want to keep it iron sights because i think iron sights teaches a child tobe better shot.an thanks to everyone ;)

It uses the standard NEF stock, so you can get a youth stock or cut an old stock to fit. My son had a .410 NEF for years that we shortened the stock on. He outgrew the .410 and it sat in the rack for years. After I got a Sidekick, I began taking a friend's10 year old hunting with it using the short stock from the .410. It fits perfectly.

She is shooting Hornady 240 XTPs in a Harvester crushrib sabot (easy to load) over 90 grains of 777, but I plan to experiment with the new Blackhorn 209 when it hits the shelves.

If I'm wrong, please correct me guys.  I would load a 50 and a 30 777. and a medium weight bullet or sabot.  The size and weight of the Lead is what is going to kick.  My wife killed a doe at 56 paces from the bottom of her tree stand with a caplock .50 pistol and 65 gr. FFFg and a patched round ball.  She broke both shoulders.  Saw and heard her shoot from my tree stand, rushed over.  The deer was dead where it had stood.  I guess the best thing is to work up a light but lethal load the child is comfortable with.  The main thing, is comfortable.  We don't want a kid starting out flinching.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

thanks again guys.that's my main concern is a comfortable load that he can shoot well.he shoots the 22s at a 14inch steel plate an can hit it 98% of the time off hand.he just started to shoot my model 9 marlin in 9mm.would a 50 grain load of 3f t7 be a lethal load to fifty yards max.i shoot only hornady 300 grain sst,but i was thinking a pure lead conical bullet might expannd better at the lower volocitys.

I shoot 300gr 44/50 sabot dead centers with 70 gr of 777 ffg by vol and dropped 6 out of 7 deer where they stood @ 65 to 100yd's the 7th one ran about 30yd's and keeled over.  When I was sighting in last fall with my new sidekick I started with 90 gr and quickly found out that hurt. It kicked harder than my 1895cb 45/70. The accuracy also wasn't there as I couldn't raise the rear site high enough to hit the target @ 75yd's.  I did drop down to 60 gr but the accuracy went down too.  The 300 gr 44/50 sabots out of my sidekick shoot well with 70 to 75 gr.  I really like the williams fire sites  on my sidekick quick and easy to align and then shoot

50-60 gr of t7 3f should do the job out to 50 yards.  I would be careful of bullet selection.  I would look at lead sabots like TC Cheapshots or knight sabots or lead conicals like the TC maxiball.  I know in my .451 white that 60 gr of pyro under a 460 gr bullet does a really good job out to 100 yards or so.  50 gr or t7 3f should be about as fast as 60 of pyrodex.  Recoil should be tolerable, even with the larger conicals.

I shot one deer with knight lead sabot (310 gr?) with 70 gr of pyrodex, went in the chest and out the ham.  I would think with a broadside shot it should completely penetrate with even 50 gr of t7 3f.
