I just purchased a contender super 223 barrel from the classified but it came without the factory sights. I wish I would of known before but that is the way it goes. I now have to decide on the purchase of open sights or find a scope.
This will be a ATV-hiking pistol and want to make it as shock proof as possible. I have been looking at the fiber optic sights verses scope to keep the profile down. Any feed back as to best way to go. Would be interested in a used set of stock or fiber optic sights.

I would scope it .....with a 2.5x7 T/C scope maxima base and rings just a good strong combo.

I second PJ's recommendation for the scope. However I would get the lighted reticule model. Don't have any experience with that mount he mentions, I use the Burris single dovetail rings and bases on most of my Contender barrels and never had a problem with that scope or mount on my 14" .223's.

weaver base, Burris Signature Zee rings, Bushnell 3200 2-6x32...sitting on a 13.5" 30 Bellm at the moment with no problems. Also been on a 10" 44 mag with no probs. Ought to handle the 223 without breathing hard, and as fast as it shoots you'd want a scope anyway I'd think.

Open sights shouldn't be hard to find. What length barrel will determine the heights, as there is a couple different sight heights. I like open sights if I'm just plinking but when I want to hit something very far away, I prefer a scope.

I'm a Burris handgun scope junkie. The 3-12 is one of the best scopes out there for T/C's. There seems to be a lot of trouble with the new ones since they switched from the plastic to steel knobs. Having said that, I just bought a T/C 2-7 lighted. Haven't used it much yet so I don't know its durablity, but I really like it. I like it enough that I bought a spare for my next barrel. I'm not sold on the lighted reticle yet but wanted it for hunting.

I just sent you a pm with sights I would sell, but I have to agree that the scope is the way to go. The scope really isn't going to add that much bulk to a 14" barreled handgun anyway and the accuracy will be much better with a scope. I have 3-12 Burris on my .223 and also have a 2-7 TC on a .22 hornet. Both are excellent scopes. I also like the 2x Leuopold if my shots are going to be under 150 yards, as it has a wider field of view than the others.

Thanks for all the replys. Do you guys hunt with the pistols or just use targets. I was wondering as to carry and off hand shooting. Bipods???
I make the " Just Sling It " slings but haven't had a pistol barrel for a few years. . Went to carbine barrels. Getting the pistol bug again. When Justin was still at Bullberry he had me make him a few and then I started to sell them to Bullberry, Virgin Valley and E.A. Brown. Picked up a used stainless 223 super 14 but there were no sites and wanted to try open sites first before a scope. Has anyone tried a 308 on an Encore frame?

I hunt with mine. I just carry it. I've tried slings and holsters but don't like them. I use bipods if I am shooting from a bench or prone. I also use shooting sticks for hunting. I took two 3/4"-1" wooden dowels and put a bolt through them with a wing nut 6-8" from the end.

I use the shooting sticks for ground still hunting, a homeade rest that screws into the tree (for treestand hunting-kind of like the video camera support they are now selling), and a monopod for the stalking/moving hunt. The monopod has a homeade rest on top of it, so it will support the front forearm and the frame at the back. It is EXCELLENT for longgun and pistol hunting and probably would be my choice if I could pick one support item for my pistols. I made it from a camera monopod from Walmart, a dowel, female camera adapter (hardware store), and a block of wood. Total cost about $11.50.

Wish I could claim credit for the idea, but I think I found the plans on the HandgunHunting webpage. It is extremely portable and adjustable for the on the go pistolaro (sp?),
