One split Case Neck out of 50
« on: March 03, 2008, 06:00:03 PM »
Got a question.
Purchased a box of 50 re-manufactured .223 ammo.
They shot very well by the way.   But what I noticed was a 1mm split in one case neck.
Would this be any indication for alarm?

I've ejected many hundreds of cases, in many calibers, with split necks, and no problems safety or accuracy wise.  But the case is no good for further reloading.  The reloads you bought were probably cases that have been reloaded quite a few times.

I don't think I agree with the idea that the brass has been reloaded many times but I do agree that it's no cause for alarm.  That can happen with a box of new store bought.

Was the split there before or after you shot it?

I watched a guy at the range picking up every piece of brass laying on the ground. When I asked what his plans are for the brass (we have a "NO $ gain" policy) he said he sends them to a company that reloads them! They send him a box of reloads for each box of empties he sends in. He said it was cheaper than new and easier than reloading them himself. Of course they charge him a service charge plus S&H .When I asked if he knew the history of the brass he sent in, he replied "IT DON'T MATTER,They just send back what ever they have on hand. He claimed to have sent in some 200 Remington cases and got back MOSTLY military cases.
If I use remanufactured ammo, IAM THE GUY remanufacturing it!

Thanks Veral,  I'll toss this one out of the lot.    These probably have been reloaded several times from the looks of the brass.   Better be mindful of that when I reload them.

Castaway;  I'm pretty sure the split developed when I shot it.
