Scope for Win 70 Featherweight 6.5x55
« on: January 20, 2008, 08:04:25 PM »
Hello All,

I recently acquired a rifle I have been searching for, a Model 70 FWT in 6.5x55.  I have about $1000 to spend on a scope and mounts.  What are some combinations you guys like for general hunting?  Pics would be appreciated.

PS  I'm in Alberta, Canada.  ???

muskwa:  (1) Bushnell Banner Dawn to Dusk - about $80.  Save about $900 for ammo, dinner, girlfriend, etc.  (2) Bushnell 3-9 X 40 - about $100.  Save about $900 for ammo, steaks, drinks, new girlfriend...........  The scopes are great deals and are very reliable.  Clarity is fabulous.  The rest is just a thought.  Mikey

I have 2 Bushnell Banners; and, while I agree they're a very good scope for the money, I wouldn't go so far as to call the clarity fabulous.  Next to my Nikon Buckmaster or Burris Fullfield II, it's clear (pun intended) the Nikon and Burris have better resolution and a sharper, clearer image.  Most noticable is the distortion around the outer edge of the Banner's image.  I'm not trying to badmouth the Banners.  Like I said, I've got 2 and like them.  But if I had $1,000 to invest in a scope, I'd look at other models.  This list is by no means inclusive, but I'd consider Bushnell's 3200 or 4200 lines, Nikon Monarchs, and Leupold VX-IIIs.  There are plenty of other good choices.

On a 6.5 Swede I'd be leaning towards anything between 2-7X and 4-12X.  I can't see much need for a 50mm objective on a hunting rifle.  In low light, dial a 40mm  down to a lower magnification and you've got more available light than you can use.  Why put up with those high mounts and heavy scopes if you don't need 'em?

I suggest a Leupold fixed 4x33, 6x42 with the heavy duplex, or a VX III 3x9 with the heavy duplex. I'd spring for a post & duplex reticle from their custom shop if I got the 4x. For mounts I'd get Talley one piece light weights.

I like the Leupold 3x9x40 VXII. It will save a couple of ounces in weight when compared to most scopes of the same magnification.   You can still get them for about $300.  I have one on a 6.5x55 Encore that works nicely.  Its taken three whitetails and three antelope in the last year.   Oh, and I use the Burris detachable Zee rings with it.

I would strongly consider a Ziess Conquest 3x9x40. I have several and have been happy with each and everyone. The glass is fantastic and the price is very fair.

I have a stainless featherweight in 6.5x55. I mounted a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40. I used Leupold extension bases ( due to the long action to get correct eye relief), and medium Leupold rings. Low rings might have worked, but I didn't want to take any chances.

To me the Featherweight just asks for a smaller scope. Mine wears an old Vari X III 2.5 X 8

My 6.5x55 is not on a featherweight, but it is a trim little rifle and wears a trim 4x32 Swift MarkII scope. Not a big grand name, but huge on performance, and small in size. Keeps the rifle in a trim, relatively light package. My wife likes it like that.

My personal featherweight is a 30/06 and I had it fitted with a barrel band open front and a lyman peep rear.....about the same money as getting a good scope and It will never let me down in bad weather.

Good Luck

 Hi

I have a Leupold 3x9x40 VXII on my 6.5x55 96. Light stock and 22 inch barrel.
Light as a feather.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I got a smokin' deal on a Burris 3-9X33 Short Mag scope($320 Canadian).  It is very bright and clear, yet compact and lightweight.  I used a Leupold 2 piece base that I had on hand, but may try the low Talley Lightweights as has been suggested.

Thanks again,

Gavin

I have a 70 featherweight with the Leupold 2.5X8 VXIII.  It balances well and looks "proper".  Some people put too much scope on a featherweight rifle and it looks - well - out of balance.  Know what I mean, Vern?

320 Canadian sounds pretty expensive for a short mag. I bought one for 260 US a year ago. I do agree that it is a very nice scope for the money.

Scopes in general in Canada are 50% to 100% more expensive than in the States.    >:(  The Burris I bought was marked down from $500!  There is some stupid law which prevents the cheap export of scopes from the USA, all a part of the gun control agenda I guess.

I also have a featherweight - from the first year they reintroduced it.  Mine wears a 2.5X8 Leupold, the same that many before me have recommended.  I used Control rings.
