30-30 to 7.62x54R
« on: March 08, 2008, 05:31:05 PM »
I know this has been talked about before, I know it will clean up a 30-30 chamber.  What ejector/extractor would work for it?  I think I want to build one.  I also know that 7.62x54r is larger then .308 usually .311+.  My intention would be to shoot cast bullet in it mostly maybe some jacketed bullets, no mil surplus and everything would be hand loaded.  Last time I talked to my smith it was $50 to re chamber.

Anyone have one?

I can get a new Handi in 30-30 for $200 plus tax so for about $300 I could get this done.

It would work, you would have to find a reamer with a small pilot on it.  You would then have a rifle with slightly less performance than a .308 has.  The ejector for a .410 may work with a little modification.  I have a 300 Savage reamer that could get you about the same thing.  Larry

Or...find a 7.63X39 barrel which already is bored at .310.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

Why not just re-chamber it and then just load .308 bullets in the 54r cases?????  My dad and I shoot .308 bullets out of out mosins. Before anyone says .... I know I know mosins are .311

:)  I want to do a 30-40 Krag or a 30-40 Krag Improved , but I  won't  attempt it until I am sure everything will be centered up from the firing pin to the muzzle &  I'll end up with a "clean - tight" chamber.  No use going to the time, trouble & expense if reasonable improvement cannot be expected !   ::)   Jim

Not all Mosin Nagants are .311, some are .308.
It depends on which arsenal they were made at.

NightStalker,
That would be what I would do.  Actually probably .309 cast bullets.

Stan,
Try and find a 7.62x39 barrel that some one is willing to part with.

Last night I put a 7.62x54 empty into my 45-70 barrel, the ejector worked but I could see the rim being to small for a 45-70 ejector.  I also tried the empty in my 410 barrel, it wouldnt chamber but it appears that ejector would be small enough to expand out to work properly.

I have done a lot of reloading for Mosins.  If you have RCBS or other dies that have a replaceable expander you can substitute a 308 expander for the 311 and have a usable setup.  Just a thought.

The 500 S&W ejector/extractor should work the case head is real close to the same size. I re barreled A mosin to a 500 s&w an had no issues with the extractor.

I would think that .30-40 cases would be much easier to find.

I re chambered a 7.62x39 to a 7.62x54R. Shoots about 2 inch at a 100 yards with factory ammo. Haven't reloaded for it yet. Bob

I have dies and brass for both the 30-40 and the 7.62x54r, I cast my own bullets in 30 caliber.  Either would be a big step up from 30-30.  But the 30-30 and 30-40 dont do much for me.  I more or less want something different to play with, I like my Mosin but not enough to go ahead and scope it and restock it.  I do however like the cartridge...  that is why I am looking at rechambering a new 30-30 handi.

Problem you will have is the reamer will not fit in a .308 bore, the pilot will be ground for a .311 bore.  If you find a removable pilot reamer and put a .308 pilot on it you will then get a thoat cut for .311 in a 308 barrel, and a neck to match, all in all a hosed up affair.  Things are just not that easy.  Larry

i'd argue for the krag, because reloading would be so much easier. do the ackley improved version, and equal the .308 ballistics, easily.
