Scope base for Encore ProHunter
« on: March 21, 2008, 10:42:07 AM »
I originally bought a 209x50 ProHunter and added a Maxima all steel (weaver style) base and Burris Signature rings. I recently bought a 20" Katahdin 45-70 bbl and intended to put matching rings and bases on it so that I could easily switch the optics between the two if I wanted to.

However, the Katahdin bbl begins to taper at about 3" from the breech end and the Maxima base is about 4.5" long. This would leave the forward 1.5" of base floating above the barrel.

How have you guys mounted your Encore barrels with similar tapers?

[For what it's worth, I'm thinking of putting a Burris Speed-dot (or similar) on the 45-70 bbl.]

The Warned Maxima bases are my favorite bases for Contenders & Encores.  I use them with the Warne quick detach rings so I can easily move scopes between barrels.  And yes, it's normal for the base to hang over the taper of the barrel a bit.  It's not ideal esthetically but it still works fine.

Is there a shorter base that would not extend over the tapered section of the barrel? If I use a a red-dot sight , ring placement wouldn't be an issue with a short base.

Thompson/Center's Duo Ring base won't hang over.  If you use it for a 45-70, you need to find a way to keep the scope from slipping in the rings and make sure you Locktite the base to the barrel.  Some use various adhesives; I just stopped using them for rounds with heavy recoil.  I still use one and like it on a 222; when I had one on a 460 S&W Magnum, the scope slipped in the rings with recoil and the Duo Ring base loosened after 50 to 75 rounds even with Locktite.

Just buy a weaver base and cut it back like I did.bead bead blast  it for the stainless look and it works great.
