More Encore Forearm Questions
« on: July 17, 2003, 02:21:04 AM »
First, I am only looking at the composite forearms at the moment.

I understand that the standard forearm will work for both the 24 inch tapered barrel and the 26 inch heavy barrel - how is that possible, is does it leave space on the sides when installed on the 24 incher or does it put excessive pressure on the sides of the 26 inch barrel?

How about the Katadin carbine forearm, does it have the same lenght as the standard forearm, how about the hole spacing, would it fit the 26 inch heavy barrel better than the standard forearm - that is apply less pressure?  What is the barrel diameter difference between the Katadin carbine barrel and the 26 inch heavy barrel?  Would the Katadin carbine forearm fit a "full bull" custom barrel.

Finally how does the 20 Ga shotgun forearm fit into all of this?  Is the hole spacing the same, would this forearm work for use on the Katadin carbine?  What is the diameter of the shotgun barrel vs the others?  Are the outside dimentions of the shotgun forearm the same as the others?

I am having a custom barrel made and am trying to figure out which of the factory forearms I could use.  The muzzle diameter / taper I specified is 0.875.

I picked up a 300 win mag heavy used, so I ordered a new wood forearm. When It got here, I started playing with it and all my other encore toys. I do the wood thing exclusively. Without modification any forearm fit any barrel I had, except the muzzleloader of course. I then opened up all the clearances to float them so they are even more universal now. I don't know personally, but there is a post on this board somewhere that a fellow uses his muzzle loader forearm on his shotgun barrel by making some spacers of some sort. I retrospect, I wish I hadn't spent the money on the long forearm, the shoter one works just fine. :D

Custom barrel specs

I am having Reeder Custom Guns make my barrel, in a 16.5 inch lenght, I asked them to drill and tap it so I can use either a standard TC composite pistol forearm or a rifle forearm.  I specified to use a 0.875 muzzle diameter - the same as the TC Custom Shop heavy barrel profile, but that is a bit bigger than the heavy barrel profile for the rifle lenght barrel 0.850.  I don't know what the muzzle diameter of the Katahdin carbine barrel is, but it looks larger than the heavy rifle barrel from the pictures I have seen.  So, I thought that perhaps the Katahdin composite forearm might be more appropriate for this application, and apply less pressure to the barrel which could effect accuracy.  If you have seen the photo of the Encore pistol on the EA Brown web site, stainless with a rifle forearm a pistol grip and a bipod, my idea is something like that.

Does anyone know what the differences are between the standard composite forearm and the Katahdin carbine forearm?
