Which barrel for 30-40 Krag rechamber
« on: March 09, 2008, 06:41:28 AM »
Which bbl would lend it's self better to the 30-40 Krag? The 30-30 or the 308 and do either of these bbl's come 24"? I don't plan on cast bullets but am thinking in the 180-220gr range with jacketed up to maybe 2500fps.Also what about extractor which would need less work?  Kurt

My 30-40 Krag barrel was originally a 30-30. I only use factory ammo and it shoots and kills real good.....

I think the 30-30 is the only viable candidate, the 30-40 case is smaller at the case head, .457" compared to .470" for the 308.

my 30-40 barrel started life as a 30-30. It is exceptionally accurate and easy shooting (little felt recoil) and shoots honest 1" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo....<><....:)

:)  Tim : I want to do this conversion from a 30-30 barrel to a 30-40 Krag or a 30-40 Krag Improved if it is not that much more trouble. If I understand the process correctly, cutting the chamber & cutting the throat are separate steps ?  Is the rim included when the chamber is cut ?  And what about the ejector or the extractor ?

What are some good sources for reamers, & is rough & finish reaming needed ?

I am a retired millwright so I have better than average machinist skills .  But I would want everything to come as true as possible . Can this conversion be well done in a garage or should it just go straight to a "smith" ?    :-\   Jim  THANKS

Jim, I haven't done a chamber ream myself yet, just throatings of three 45-70s and the 35 Rem, but give Fred Z a call at GBO sponsor 4D, he'll answer all your questions, you can rent the reamer from him too, the reason I posted the Ackley was the same thought you had, might as well ream to the improved chamber, costs the same. He doesn't list the Ackley reamer, but he may still have it. Several of us are waitin for a 460S&W reamer to get in his shop. ;D
