New Rifle!!! 1st in 14 years!! 22-250
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:35:48 AM »
Hello all.  I am new to the forum as well as Handi's.   ;D I recently purchased a 22-250 for $199 w/o a scope.   ;D ;D ;D For now, I also got a Tasco 3-9X40 scope for $57.  Took it home and cleaned it a bit (not as much as I should have but I didn't know... ???).  After sighting in, I was shooting about 1" groups @ 100yards.  Shooting 45 grain winchester and remmington factory loads.  A week later I took it to the range and managed to get 3 rounds in under 0.55" shooting the same ammo.  @ 200 yards was a different story...  I hit the paper.  But as I was nearing the end of my day I noticed that my scope became loose!!! :'( >:(,  So next time i'll have to sight in again... Oh well...  maybe I'll be able to try some hand loads by then.  So far I have shot 70 rounds through her.

I love this rifle!!

Anyways, I jus wanted to say hi and share my excitement.

Welcome aboard sonof, it does sound as if got a great shooter right out of the box, thats great. Most .22-250's shoot pretty and they make a fine varmint rifle and some here use them for deer. I am happy you found us and this site, it's a great place and a pretty nice bunch of guys, so sit back and settle in, you will have fun here....<><....:)

P.S. - if you keep coming around and visiting I predict either another barrel for your gun (receiver) or another gun within 3 months...

Great shooting and welcome to the forum.

My wife thinks I haven't bought a gun in 14 years too. ;D

I feel pretty lucky bout my 250.  From what Ive read on this site they aren't the greatest shooter.  After finding this site, I was in between shoots, I was all prepared to polish the bore and float the barrel.  I still might though. What do all you experienced handi owners think?  If it aint broke...; or it couldnt hurt?

It sure is a great little round though.  Im thinking the .223 or the .45-70 or perhaps the .357 next. ;D  Can't beat another rifle for about $100 bucks

:o :D ;D

Thats great news!   Thanks for all the welcomes.

You are going to get a welcome from me too. Welcome to GBO ;D Pretty much, if it ain't broke leave it alone. I have found that polishing the bore does not hurt anything and usually helps with the clean up, it does not foul as bad. If your not getting bad fouling, I would leave it alone. Some guns shoot better dirty. I have been working with a 22 Hornet and I think it going to like being dirty better than clean. Towards the end of my shooting sessions, it starts to shoot a little better. I have been giving it good cleaning after each shooting session, but think I will let it ride for a little while to see how it shoots.

Yup, those are all must have Handi calibers.  Welcome to GBO, a fantastic group of people willing share the experiences they have had.  It sounds like you have found the FAQ.  There is a wealth of information there.

MSP, do you think it will really take him 3 months?  That would put it all the way to June.  After all, the weather is suppose to be getting nicer and with the time change it means longer shooting days.

Welcome and congrats on the new addition to the family. It sounds like you did everything right! ;D

Also it sounds like sonof isn't the only one that found a keeper. Right Mc? If only we could all be so lucky!

I have never really been a betting man, so "within 3 months" is like betting on a horse to "show" (to come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd). He can buy that next Handi or barrel anywhere from the day of my statement to 3 months from that day and I would be correct in my expectations and prediction....<><.... ;D

MSP, you do have it covered.  It sounds like you have been listening to too many attorneys.  ::)

I think everyone should buy a new gun at least every 14 years or then you could do like some of us and make it a lot closer to once every 14 days.  :o ;D

First, I have either been listening to too many attorneys or to many clients/defendants....

Second, I suggest going the route of If it ain't broke don't fix it...if the inherent accuracy ever starts to deteriorate then you can do the clean and scrub routine....<><....:)
