Recoil question
« on: March 14, 2008, 01:08:50 AM »
Have owned, shot and reloaded for Ruger Blackhawk (45Colt) and SRH (454).  Looking to get in to an Encore.  How does the recoil compare between an Encore 12" and  Super BLACKhawk in 44 mag or hot 45 Colt?  The Encore is pretty heavy (4.5 lbs) and the barrel is long, so it seems this should help reduce recoil compared to a sixgun.  Thanks

If I had a weight for the Ruger I could tell you with more precise figures. But if you use the same load for both guns and if the weight of the Ruger is 1/2 that of the Encore,,,, the Encore will  have slightly half of the recoil velocity and energy.
But let's say the Encore is 4.5# and the Ruger is 2.5#, and again with the same load,( i just plugged a theoretical load in from a manual). The Encore had 14.5 fps velocity, 14.7 ft/lbs energy, the Ruger was 26.1 and 26.4 respectively.

Personally, I think the grip and how it fits the hand has more to do how recoil is felt and perceived. I had a Ruger BH some time  back, while not brutal, I didn't find it a pleasure to shoot. My Encore with a .30 cal running a 165 gr at 2500fps, falls between those 44 numbers above. with the factory syn. grip, I found it less than pleasant and was using a semi 2 handed grip. I switched to a wood grip that I custom made to fit my hand. That same 165 gr load turned into a breeze to shoot and my groups were cut in 1/2. But a Pachy would have made a difference on the BH also. Grip angle on traditional revolvers are made for "natural pointing", little thought in design, goes into recoil management.

I know this got slightly off and more in depth then what was asked, but felt it was relevant, when comparing.

No, not too much info!  Unrelated to T/C, I've heard the Bisley grip is more comfortable than the BH or SRH grip.  And everyone says the same thing, its the shape of the grip (Bisley).  Seems to hepl with recoil more.  Thanks.

I think the Bisley grip is the most punishing I have ever shot.  Only gun I wore a glove anytime I shot it.  Everyone perceives recoil differently.

Everyone perceives recoil differently.

That's it in a nut shell IMO.   Grip/frame shape, your particular shooting mechanics and how you go with the flow and roll with recoil determines how much of it is transmitted to you.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Shoes run size 1-12 for a reason: we all have different sized feet and they bear a lot of weight (force) during the course of a day. Gloves are similar - one size does not fit all. Therefore why should one handgun grip fit all? I believe this is overlooked in the industry.

IF you've not shot one before the spur on the trigger guard will hit your finger pretty good the FIRST shot....  ;)

MAN, I can vouch for that one actually done it twice and I will never do it again my middle finger was sore for a week each time . I soon learned you keep that finger taped or wear a glove or put some tape on the trigger gaurd.
