Versa Pack Combo in 17 HMR and 20 guage
« on: March 11, 2008, 03:25:46 PM »
I just picked up a Vera Pack combo in 17 HMR with a 20 gauge barrel from the new Cabela's in Gonzales, LA.   I've been doing search's about information regarding this particular combo but have found nothing about it. It is a factory combo that came with the box and bag. This one has the wood straight grip stock. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fire it and had to take it back for repair(free) since it didn't happen to have a firing pin in it. I tried the 17 and 20 gauge barrels on my other SB2 frame and while they locked up they were wobbily. The 17 HMR barrel has the same plastic rear sight with an orange plastic front site.
Has anyone heard of this particular combo and when they were produced?
thanks for any information in advance.

I have never heard of one and I hope they did not send it back to the factory, you might never get it back. It may have slipped out in error. I have never even heard of one before. If it is still at the Cabels's I suggest you get it back and put a firing pin in it yourself to be sure it remains in your possession. PLEASE keep us posted, and what was the model number and caliber stamped on the carton? Do they have any more in stock? I would like to get one....<><....:)

That was never one of the 3-barrel combos they offered temporarily 2 yrs ago, maybe they did some swapping around cuz they did offer the 17hmr in other combos.

I can't say there aren't since they advertised they were gonna make em at one time, just in a different combo. One could say there could be just about anything made at one time or another, Shaner has a 24" bull barrel 22 Hornet barrel that is apparently a one off, no one else has ever reported one, he got it direct from H&R by chance when he asked.  ;D

This was a used combo that was on their used gun racks, Funny thing is, I looked at this combo for probably 3 weeks before deciding to get it.
It says SCA-217 on the sticker at the top.
It  has the following on the label:

Model  Caliber    BRL Length   Accessory Barrel                     ( Bar CODE)
SCA     17 HMR       20"           20 GA 22" Mod

New England Firearms     combination rifle/shotgun
Gardner, MA  Made In USA                                                            VERSA_PACK

The model caliber etc above is in boxes.

There is another label on the box that says:
Cabela's
Versa-Pack  17HMR/20
along with the bar code
ID Num XXXXXXXX

Serial # NSXXXXXX

The box is a H&R NEF factory box.
I am wondering if perhaps this particular model was made for distribution by Cabela's

The 17HMR barrel has Versa-Pack on it. The 20 gauge barrel does not.

I will give NEF a call and maybe they can shed some light on this particular model.

That's very likely, there are lots of special order firearms that have been made over the years for different retailers and distributors.  ;)

Yes, a very nice combo and perhaps a one of a kind, or one of a few at least. It does look as if it was made by H&R. Consider yourself very lucky and thanks for sharing the info with us....<><...:)

Yes , its an offset barrel for the 17hmr
I called NEF and the gun was made in 2002 and was offered as a combo.
Very Few were made but there were no production figures for how many. She said they could have been made and offered through Cabela's as a special promotion/order for them but there was no information about any of that in the computer.

So, gents, there appear to be at least one (mine) that was made with the offset bore and there are probably more out there floating around.
If I ever decide to sell it, I'll offer it on here to y'all first.
