M700 Classic 6.5x55 SE rate of twist???
« on: March 29, 2008, 04:42:38 PM »
What is the rate of twist for Rem. 700 Classic (mfg. 1994) in 6.5x55 Swede?

I plan to work up my first reloads around the 140 gr. Hdy. Spire Point.  I have four boxes of Hdy. factory 140 gr. ammo to get a scope mounted and dialed in.  From there I will neck size the once-fired brass and be off and running.

I have no personal experience with this rifle, but from what I can glean from others this particular rifle offers a 1/9" rate of twist.  Your rifle will probably shoot the 140 grain bullets okay but will not attain the accuracy that it might achieve with slugs of 130 grain or less.  I base this statement on the results of my 264Win with the 1/9" barrel.

Remington no longer offers anything in 6,5x55 but they do still offer the Model Seven CDL in .260 Remington and it has the 1 in 9" twist which I think Remington kinda considers to be a standard in the 6,5mm bore. I'm pretty sure that would be what yours has as well. I suspect that bullets up to 140 grains should stabilize fine at that twist rate and round nose 160s might if you push them to the pressure levels of other modern cartridges but might not at the more sedate pressures typical of this round.

Extra long rounds like the Nosler BTs, Hornady SST and such would be the least likely to stabilize at the 140 grain weight or the Barnes copper bullets which are even longer for a given weight.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought I had seen 1 in 9" but could not resurrect the source.  I notice that VihtaVouri load manual shows a a 1 in 8.5" for their load testing.  VV shows 160 gr. Hdy. RN running at 2350 and 2510MV, but no pressure data is supplied.

I would hope that when Rem. put out the Classic 6.5x55 in 1994 they selected the 1:9" rate of twist to suit the widest range of bullets.  I understand about some of the newest bullet types being "long for caliber."  I expect standard design bullets will suit me just fine with the possible exception of trying some Nosler PTs.

I posed this question at the Remington Firearms (corporate) site and got a reply.  It seems that the Classic 91994) 6.5x55 has a 1:8 rate of twist.  That should be fast enough to stablize any bullet I will want to load for it.
