Hevi-Shot Duck less dense than lead?
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:32:10 PM »
I have read a report on another forum that the Hevi-Shot Duck brand is less dense than lead.  This is in distinction from its forebears that was heavier than lead and which is still true of its more expensive competitors by Winchester and Remington.  The report I read says Hevi-Shot Duck cannily trumpets being heavier than steel but says nothing of its density with respect to lead.

Can anyone provide any clarification of this?  I recently bought 12 boxes of Hevi-Shot Duck and am going to feel pretty raw and used if this stuff is only about 20% denser than steel but well less dense than lead.

According to a review of the four big names in non toxics in the February issue of American Hunter the density ratings are as follows:

Winchester Supreme Elite 12.0 gr./cc
Federal Premium Ultra Shock High Density 10.4gr/cc
Environ Metal Heavy Shot 12.0 gr./cc
Remington Wingmaster HD  12.0 gr./cc

The information I've been seeing shows a distinction between "Hevi-Shot Duck" and "Hevi-Shot Goose."  The Hevi-Shot Goose is the familiar 12.0 g/cc density long associated with Hevi-Shot.  The packages of Hevi-Shot Goose stipulate "Heavier than Lead."  The Hevi-Shot Duck is said by some to be 9.9 g/cc density.  This is less dense than lead which is about 11.0 g/cc.  The packages of Hevi-Shot Duck stipulate "Heavier than Steel."  I do not think that is an accident.  I'm certainly not going to pay $23/box of 10 for 2 3/4" #6 Hevi-Shot Duck or $25/box of 10 for 3" #4 Hevi-Shot Duck IF it is 9.9 g/cc density.  I've seen quite a bit of corroboration of this lower density for Hevi-Shot Duck, but am still seeking rock solid corroboration.  If I can get this rock solid corroboration I'm going to be talking to a number of people who continue to broadcast the 12.0 g/cc density specification for Hevi-Shot Duck and ask them to report the revised figures -- American Hunter, Cabela's web site, and others.  I'll also try to share the information with fellow hunter consumers.  I like to know what I'm buying and that I'm getting what I'm paying for.

Why not contact the manufactures involved and ask them? They are the ones that should know. Regards, Byron
