I have an older Savage model 24B break barrel o/u .22/.410. A family friend who passed away a few years ago gave it to my dad, who gave it to me as my first gun. I have been told it is worth about $1,400, but I'm not sure, I'd appreciate any info on the value. Anyway, its broke. The selector swith to change from the 22 barrel to the 410 barrel wont move and is stuck about a 1/4 inch below its lowest point. the lever to break open the barrel moves, but has no reaction inside. the barrels do not lock closed, and can be opened without using the lever. And the hammer works but it doesnt come all the way forward to activate the firing pin. Does anybody know whats wrong, and if you do, could I make the repair at home, or would I need to go to a gunsmith?

It was working fine before I took it out squirrel hunting. I had broken open the barrel to carry it around, but I never saw anything until I got back to my house and went to close it when I noticed...

I have one of those (.22 Mag / 20 gauge) and it had a similar problem. I took it to a 'smith who found the selector arm had broken. The internals on those 24's are pretty simple, but I don't know if parts are readily available any more. Personally, I'd take it to a gunsmith.

I saw a .22 / .410 for sale within the last year, somewhere around $400, good shape.

The Blue Book Of Gun Values shows Savage 24B at $185 in 100% condition.

Some guys must really like those guns.

When ya get it fixed, let us know what the problem was. I've got an older one too, also from Dad, that doesn't have a serial number (at least not that I can locate). Wish they still made them with WOOD stocks. A model in the new .17 HMR caliber would be something to try, too...

Yeah, mine has the wood stock. The new ones with the synthetic stocks and ring around the barrel just look funny.
I was thinking that if Savage ever makes a 24 with the 17 barrel over a 410, just buy a barrel and change em back and forth. If the 17 would work, I think it shoud, as being the rimfire and all, it would save the money of buying a whole new gun.

I was showing my brother my model 24 friday night and telling him how to get the stock off. He asked to see it. He started to try to move the 22 410 selector switch, and it worked! The barrel was opep, he tried closing it, and it snapped shut! The lever to break open the barrel worked and had the correct, crisp feeling to it! I tried the hammer, and it Worked! I didnt do a darn thing to it. So I got out Saturday to test it out. And it worked! Well, at least the 22 did. Still no firing on the 410 barrel.

I guess it wasnt broken, just a spring had slipped or something, still gotta figure out the 410 though!

I'd take it in for a checkup. Could be all sorts of things, like maybe a broken 410 firing pin rattlin' around inside--sometimes in the way of moving parts....sometimes not.
