Knight KP1 scope base choices
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:48:03 AM »
This may have been covered here already, but I could not find it.  What scope bases are available for the KP1?  I have seen the Dednutz  on-line, and I have seen pictures of 2 piece bases.  The 2 piece bases seem a little close together , not allowing much scope movement.   The dednutz seems to have a little more room for movement.

Thanks for the help.

The hole spacing is 1/2" so it's a matter of finding bases with that hole spacing AND the proper contour.  I first went with two piece bases made for Knight round tops but had problems with positioning the scope as desired.

But I was lucky to discover that 2 front bases for White 97 would fit and give me good positioning options.  Those are not readily available though.

What is available are Knight's own round top two piece bases (basically Weaver 45 or S45) or other brands stated to fit the Knight round tops.

If you could contact Skullmount on one of the several forums he visits - he can probably fix you up with some altered Weaver Grand Slam S-452 bases.  These fit the contour but the hole spacing is incorrect so a second hole is added.  I will pm you his email addy.

The base on the left is unmodified, the right one has the additional hole drilled.  Skullmount would need to know you need two bases with option 2.  :)

I have my 45-70 now and the manual addresses this to some degree.   As follows....See through #900790, Weaver Ring/Base Sets #900775, #900776, Redfield  Ring/Base Sets #900731, and One Piece Base and Rings #900777.

At the time I did my write up on the KP1, I was told SPECIFICALLY and CORRECTLY that the Knight 900732 made for the Vision would not work properly.  I was told two new bases were forthcoming, Knight part numbers 900781 and 900778, and those would be designed for the KP1.

The Knight 900732 is made for the Vision and will NOT fit the KP1.  It will fit on the KRB7, but mounting it on the KRB seemed to torque the base a bit.  That could be by design or because of the contour differences in the barrels.

Thus far, from what I have seen, I believe I prefer the Dednutz mounts the most.

You would probably like Knight-Talley then. http://www.impactguns.com/store/SS-53726.html

Wakeman has those pictured in his review.

You are right, and they are considerably less costly.  After reading Wakeman's article, it looks like the high rings are the ones to get.

I don't guarantee this for sure, but I believe the Weaver #45 bases will work for that.  I was having problems finding bases for my KRB7 and someone told me most of the new model of Knights have the 1/2'' hole spacing, and the Weaver #45 base will fit.  I got a pair and they fit nicely on my KRB7.

Got mine back yesterday.  Remounted the Sightron SII 3x9 with hi Warne QDs (gloss is all I had) on modified Weaver Grand Slam S452 bases.  Good solid fit but not quite as much fore and aft freedom for positioning scope.

Update to above misinformation (now corrected) ... The Knight 900732 is made for the Vision and will NOT fit the KP1.

The 900777 is also made for the Vision so I do not see how it could fit the KP1 either (uses the 900732 base as far as I can tell).

Looks like the best choice for most people would be either the Dednutz http://www.dednutz.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=49&zenid=d195b0555b41a2d15b6c6ae8ae3604a1

or the less expensive Talley-Knights  http://www.impactguns.com/store/SS-53726.html

The rest of the numbers given may well be bogus.  Luckily, I have my modified S452 Grand Slams.  I prefer those as using QD rings is a big plus (IMHO) on any muzzleloader to be scoped.

Thanks for getting through all of the confusion.  Keeping all the model numbers and straight is tough, even the suppliers get it wrong on their websites sometimes.

I would love to have some test results from my 45-70, but my shooting location is probably waterlogged right now.  We have gotten nearly 4 inches of rain in the last 2 days.

I know it has been a while, but I finally ordered a Talley mount from Buds.  I hope to have time to mount a scope in it soon.

The Knight-Talley base/ring system. Knight part number 900778    these are about $40 online but currently out of stock at most dealers.  Probably the best overall choice among currently available mounting systems.

The Knight-Weaver base/ring system.  Knight part number 900781    these are about $22 online.  I don't believe that base is available separately.  That base would work nicely with some quality QD rings and is the only readily available base (to my knowledge) that allows any variation in ring positioning.

You can see the various DedNutz offerings here http://www.dnzproducts.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=49&zenid=e50b119bbf97e0931e8271c7473080ae with prices ranging from about $57 to $72.

There are other mount bases that will work.  Most any two piece base system made for Knight round tops will fit the rifle.  Few, if any, will allow any mounting flexibility so far as ring positioning.

The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

An e-mail from Weaver states that the #18 is the correct base for the Knight KP1. The #45 does not make full contact with the barrel contour.
