Ruger SS Bearcat-new site??
« on: March 20, 2008, 02:48:15 PM »
I want to use a Ruger SS Bearcat for my carry gun while hiking.
It needs a trigger job and adj rear site and new frt site.
Anyone know where I can get the work done?
Thought I would carry in a crossdraw Simply Rugged holster and add some Elk stag grips.
THANKS

I saw an article featuring the work of pistolsmith Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision and the adj. sight conversion on the Bearcat was mentioned.  The trigger work for that gun was not mentioned if I remember, but I would be surprised if he couldn't do that too.

I guess my question would be, why does the Bearcat need an adjustable sight on the back??  I have two of them, and both of mine shoot the Federal bulk pack ammo to point of aim well enough to take the occasional squirrel out to about 20 or 25 yds. I don't try to shoot them with a pistol very often, usually use a rim fire rifle, but the little Bearcats have been right on for me.  The idea of putting adjustable sights on one just seams to defeat the purpose of having one of them, in mu thoughts. They look so graceful the way they are, and the  fixed sights, once they are adjusted by filing for your load, will never get out of adjustment.

If I wanted the adjustable sights, I'd go with a Single Six. You could probably pick one up used for about the cost of putting the adj. sights on the Bearcat, and then have both.

If i was willing to settle on a single load then adjustable sights wouldn't be worth the bother but I've never stopped fiddling and don't want or expect to stop fiddling with loads.  If I could purchase the class of gun I want with the specs and details the way I want them I would.  Have.  A single six is not a small gun.  Couldn't shove it in your jeans pocket.  For what it is worth, a bearcat with $300 worth of custom sights and related shipping expenses would still be in the ballpark of a S&W mod 63.
