6.5mm Carcano - Beretta Gardone
« on: March 09, 2008, 12:47:26 AM »
As mentioned in Markp's post I've got a Beretta made 6.5 Carcano, probably pre-war according to Mikey.  It's been crudely semi-sporterized but nothing (I don't tthink) that can't be undone.  The rifle's been painted and shellaced, which I will try to remove using stripper.  The front barrel band is broken and both sling swivels are missing, so if I can locate these somewhere for a reasonable price I might be in business.

I haven't the faintest idea what the gun's history is.  It's been one of those old hand-me-downs in a closet or corner in our family camp since I can remember and I've no idea even which long deceased relative may have originally owned it.  It's been gathering dust along with another Carcano 38, a 7.35 that belonged to my grandfather and that has been somewhat sporterized back in the early  1960's, and an old Sears single shot 12-ga and an equally old single shot 22.  I don't recall anyone ever shooting it and there's no old ammo for it anywhere around the camp.

I really have no interest in further sporterizing it but wouldn't mind trying to restore it to military configuration and maybe shoot the old thing, since ammo seems to be available.  I surely don't need another deer rifle!  Thoughts?  Opinions?  Thanks.  -WSJones

WS - my latest, and rain soaked Shotgun News carried an advertisement for Carcano Stocks - can't recall exactly where in the page list it was but it was there.  If they are selling stocks, they are selling the necessary furniture to go with it.  That would allow you to re-militarize that Carcano from its current sporterized status.

Ammunition is available but you will have to look for it.  Possibly Graf and Sons might carry the 6.5 Carcano ammo.  If you reload you can have a ball with this old rifle.  You may not need another deer rifle but these things will surprise you if you get an accurate one and I can guarantee you from personal experience that the Carcano round will shoot through a Whitetail at some fairly long ranges.  HTH and Good Luck.  Mikey.

I had fun with one I bought. It has a few quirks:
1. It is not really a 6.5 (.264). Most are .268. As far as I know, all ammo you can buy is .264. This leads to a bit of inaccuracy. I hand-load with .268 bullets from Buffalo Bore. The Privi Partizan factory ammo did not shoot real bad.
2. The original iron sights were set for 200 yards (aim low).
3. The way the sights were set, is for the top of the front sight to be at the bottom of the rear notch.

The gun has a few more quirks. That's what made me add it to my collection, but I find it to be a nice plinker.

enjoy,
mike

i have one in the closet that looks just like the one last seen at the dallas police dept. very crude sporterizing and a horrible attempt to put on a side mount scope if anyone need or want one for parts let me know.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten
