« on: March 16, 2008, 02:36:43 PM »
so is the 308. really that good i always here about people using them as very long range guns but i look at the ballistics and there are some other big calibers that can out perform them in the ballistics chart. I know i have heard that the army uses them. do people like them because there's surplus ammo like the 223.?? please do tell. im interested  ???

The 308 Win. has it's place for sure. It does not compare to the 300 Win. Mag and such. It still is a great round and has a wide following. Dale

thats somthing else i wanted to ask. my old mans getting well...old and he wants to go moose hunting here sometime but he wants a good deer gun to. he's been looking at the 700 SPS SF in either a 300wsm or just the win. mag . what would you guuys choose?? the 300.wsm has a 24" barrel but i dont really see the difference the ballistics are almost identical.

jpbar,

I think you got that one right. They are essentially the same round. The WSM has the advantage (if you wan to call it that) of a shorter bolt throw. It also had the disadvantage of more expensive factory ammo. But if you reload, that's not a issue. If you do a lot of traveling and hunting, you may just want to stick with the 300 win. mag. Ammo for the 300 win mag is pretty widely available. The shorter fat stuff may be harder to come by if your in....win-a-puck nowhere, 15555.

This older model 660 shows what the .308 does so well.  This was a one shot kill at about 125 yards in rough country.  My 150 grain Remington core-lockt went all the way through the chest and vanished into the snow.  Wound channel appeared ghastly.
