It sounds like a Lebel rifle, or (more properly) a Lebel-Berthier (SP), made for the French Army B4 the First World War.
The cartridge should be the 8x51R Lebel (3-round capacity).

Frogjake,
I looked in my collector's book and can't seem to come up with anything with the info you give. Can you offer more info as per caliber, carbine, long rifle etc. I have another book around here somewhere and it might offer more.
