Been trying to get the AF to send me that way for about 14 out of 20 years with no luck.  Best chance yet lies with a Colonel friend who is going to EAFB as vice wing commander.  I have asked him to drag me along with him once he gets settled.  I guess I'll just have to hope...

EAFB?  We have two Air Force Bases in Alaska, both are EAFB.  Eielson near Fairbanks, and Elmendorf at Anchorage.  They are 400 miles apart, and a world apart not only in what is available at each location, but in climate as well.  Anchorage is a big city, with big city problems.  Everything coming into Alaska goes through Anchorage, and they don't have any shortages on anything.  Fairbanks is the end of the road.  Smaller city, we get what is left over after Anchorage pulls what they need out of each shipment.  When the temp is hovering between 15 above and zero for weeks on end in Anchorage, it will be 40 to 50 below in Fairbanks.  Fishing is more accessiable in Anchorage, Hunting is easier from Fairbanks.

Dang... you know, I've flown into both bases before and I plumb forgot that both start with an "E"!  Been to Anchorage three times enroute to Japan.  That was cool but now all I hear is that it's just another big city with all the attendant problems...  I only flew into Eielson once back in about 93.  That's the one I want...  Small but big enough.  Remote but still has most of what you want.  Been searching the 'net for land/property.  More expensive than one would think but not unaffordable at all.  Strangely enough to an outsider, NOT a lot for sale.  I didn't realize that most everything is owned by a government of some kind.  Anyway, I'd still like to try it...  Prices on everything else have probably sky-rocketed with the price of oil huh?  Shouldn't that drive up your yearly check as well?
