Remington Rolling Block with wiping stick?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:35:39 AM »
Hello, I purchased a rolling block at a gun show, built from an original action, new barrel in 45-70 and new wood. this gun was not completed, possible never fired as there was no rear sight and the metal is in the white. It was intended to be fitted with a "wiping stick" as the forearm is drilled for one and there are two dovetails for thimbles. I have seen those "pacific' rifles made this way but never a Remington. Was this ever done and if so, where can I see a picture of one? Thanks, Ed

Ed,

About a 100 years ago, there was a big-name Colorado gunsmith that specialized in making custom Remington Rolling Block rifles as you described.  His name escapes me for the moment, but recently Pedersoli and other importers offered replicas of his designs.  They are characterized by being chambered in BPCR calibers such as .45-70 and carry a wooden cleaning rod/wiping stick under the barrel like the old time muzzleloaders.

Try doing a web search for Remington Rolling Block like I did and you will find it.

John, Thanks, I did a search before I posted this question and couldn't find anything. I also searched the Pedersoli website and couldn't find such an animal listed. Still looking-------Ed

I think you are looking for the J P Gemmer conversion of the  Remington Rolling block.

He "hawkenized" a variety of military rifles among them the Rolling Block, Trapdoor and the Sharps.

Also did caliber conversion and made several 40-65 trapdoors.I have some links to pics, will post when I can find them.

One of my next projects will be a Gemmer Rolling Block, 45-70 or 50-70, can't decide on the cartridge.

Wide butt plate, rounded hawken triggerguard, pewter endcap, thimbles, wiping rod, the whole 9 yards.

I have most of the parts in the shop, just don't have the time component.

IIRC, Denver gunsmith Carlos Gove also made such rifles.

Freund Brothers, Cheyenne WY, probably modified or made similar rifles.

Dave Higginbotham, Lone Star Rifles, might have some info:

I always thought that a Rolling Block w/ a side lever conversion & a wiping stick would be very intersting.....
