Taurus Gaucho Cylinder Issue
« on: May 10, 2008, 11:05:48 AM »
Hi,

I recently picked up a new Gaucho in 357mag and I noticed that there is a bit of peening in the grove where the cylinder stop rests.  I have fired a total of 35 rounds of 38Sp and 15 rounds of 357mag.  The only thing that I can think of that would cause it would be if the cylinder is out of time by just enough to let the bullet touch the side of the forcing cone but not enough to shave lead.

If I can I will try to take some pictures of what I mean.

Any thoughts??????

We will need a picture to show us just what the situation is.  Most guns will mark the cylinder where the bolt comes up and hits the cylinder.  That is normal.  You might also have some preening in the notch itself if you have 'fanned' the gun.  Fanning puts extreme stresses on the gun as the bolt comes up and suddenly stops the cylinder as you are still slamming your hand down on the hammer.   Please get us a picture so we can correctly diagnois the problem.  If there was an alignment problem, it would be spitting lead and you would know it.

PS.  Have no fear of Taurus' warranty service.  I just received a Gaucho back for an incorrectly cut half cock notch on the hammer and I am very pleased.  Service took 4 weeks, including the shipping but they took care of the problem for me.  44 Man

Hi 44 Man,

This is the best I can get with the equipment I have on hand.  I took a thin LED flashlight and put id down the bore and I can see one side of the chamber behind the barrel but not the other side.  Its not enough to shave the bullet but just enough to shove the cylinder to one side as the bullet engages the forcing cone.  It is causing the edge of the machined latch engagement surface to be pushed up in a burr.  Also I do not "fan" my revolvers, I would like the top strap of my revolver to stay where the maker put it.

Definitely call Taurus customer service and arrange to send the pistol back to them.  Tell them the cylinder does not align with the barrel properly and is stressing the stop bolt and battering the cut in the cylinder.  That's a problem that is seldom seen on todays guns.  I'd have the factory correct it.  44 Man
