help!!
« on: March 21, 2008, 04:13:42 AM »
2001 Ford Taurus 3.0 engine.  It has a slow water leak. No puddles on the ground. You can smell the antifreeze after it has been driven a while. Uses about 1/2 gallon per month. This car is driven about 60 miles per day. It has been in 3 different shops, infrared dye has been added, they can not find the leak. I have been assured that it is not a head problem. Any ideas??

Greg if there is no external leak then without a doubt it is leaking internally.  Sorry, but whoever "assured" you it isn't a head problem is probably mistaken.  Your's certainly wouldn't be the first.

Old Syko, I have thought from the beginning it was probably a head. It has been hooked up to a  diagnostic computer and it has no codes. It's about $700.00 to do the heads. I wanted to do it, but have been told its a waste of money. I don't know which way to turn!!!

BTW, when it rains, steam will come out of the grill. That is also the area where you can smell the antifreeze. It has been pressure checked.

Although not Fords I have had a problem like this on two engines. On the advise of my parts guy ( I've dealt with him since the early '70s and he knows what he is doing) I used Alumaseal stop leak. It fixed both of them.

My Ford F-150 kept loosing antifreeze.  Almost drove me crazy.  Finally found it in the tranny.  Radiator leaked into the transmission cooler on the bottom of radiator.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I don't know if they still make it, but their used to be a product called "water glass", bought in the drug store it would stop most any water leak, some big block cracks.

What about the water pump, right around the shaft?  I've had that happen twice on different vehicles.

Thanks for the replies. Bemanbeme, I think you got it. Replaced the cap, just got back from a 500 mile trip. No water loss or antifreeze smell. Thanks again!
