Lyman 48th edt. manual
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:08:21 PM »
I have the lyman 48th manual and was wondering if the section on tc loads for .45colt colud also be safely used in a large frame ruger. In other manuals tc/ ruger loads appear one in the same, but in this manual it only says tc. Just want to be safe rather than sorry

I am thinking the Ruger is the STRONGEST, any published load will work in it.

The difference I see in the Lyman TC data is the COLs are all longer than the Ruger data.

Tim brings up a very good point with the longer COL of the TC data , with the Ruger you are limited to the length of the cylinder , to try and seat a bullet deep enough to fit you run the risk of raising pressures to a dangerous level .

The best advice i can give is too stick with data for the firearm that you will be using .

I had not thought of the OAL. For big bore revolvers I crimp reasonably heavy and the depth is set by the bullet crimp ring or what ever the technical term is

Hmm, confused now. Most of the tc data shown in my  book is still under the 1.600" max overall length for the cartridge, I think only one or 2 loads exceeds it. If i remember correctly I measured my cylinder on my ruger at around 1.700" I'll have to double check. If i use the data i will start at max end of standard pressure data and work up slowly and cautiously, watching for excessive pressure. I am specifically looking at Unique and want to use the 300 grain xtp at between 900-950 fps. Thanks for the thoughts guys, maybe I should consider getting a .454 casull...
