Welcome Josh! Current production 223 Ultras are 1:9" twist, have been for over a year, what's the serial number prefix on the frame, H?######?

Spend some time in there and you'll find most of your answers.

Mine and most 1:12" barrels shoot the 45gr Win Whitebox ammo inside ½", I've never had to handload for it since it shoots that ammo so good, most do. Unfortunately, it's no longer available. Read the accurizing tips in the FAQs, hundreds have been in your shoes before you, you aren't the first, nor the last to be there, read the FAQs, that's what they're there for,  pay close attenion to the Handi Basics 101 too. If you want heavier bullets to shoot well, try the 63gr Sierra Varminter #1370 or the 64gr Win PP, they both shoot very well in 1:12" H&Rs.

If your frame was made since 1999, you can get any barrel fitted you want except a couple shotgun barrels, the 1:9" twist 223 bull and standard barrels are all they sell now.

How new? What's the serial number prefix? New on the shelf doesn't mean made recently, just unused. H&R/Marlin hasn't made a 1:12" barrel since late 2006, possibly very early 2007, you may have a 1:9" and don't know it, or it's older than you think. ;)

Mine prefers the 50 gr bullets. The 35 and 40's just aren't as accruate for mine as the 50 or 55 grain bullets. Sierra seems to be the best so far with Hornady a very close second.
Hope this helps.

If 2006, it could be either, they switched back and forth then, best way to find out is follow the instructions in the FAQs and Help sticky under the twist rates. Even the 1:9" barrels made then didn't shoot the bigger bullets any better than the 1:12", but if you absolutely have to have a 1:9" barrel, you can get one fitted, even get the fluted barrel and a free trigger job while it's there being fitted. ;)
