9mm and 45ACP Handi Anybody?
« on: March 12, 2008, 06:55:48 AM »
Hello,

As many of you know the majority of my shooting is limited to a 15 yard indoor range.  While center fire rifle cartridges are forbidden, to include 30 Carbine, most center fire pistol cartridges are allowed in a rifle.  My 45 Colt and 357 Magnum Handi barrels are great fun to plink with indoors.  All I need now are barrels in 9mm and 45ACP.  Think we will ever see either?

I am hoping to see my .45 ACP barrel in a month or so. I am having one stubbed using a 20 gauge shotgun barrel as a donor and a new SS .45 ACP Barrel. The 9mm would be fun also but I am partial to the good old .45 ACP. I have shot it and loaded for it for many years. It is a great cartridge, and like an old friend....<><....:)

I'd love to see Handi Rifles offered in 9mm & 45 ACP. Anyone else share our fetish?

I see on the mcace website, they have 18" barrel inserts in 9mm and 45acp for shotguns.   They are a lot cheaper than a stub project IF they work.

A Handi in 9mm and .45 ACP? Heck yea!
But looking at the track record of the Marlin Camp 9 and Camp 45, (discontinued due to low demand) and now the Ruger PC9 and PC4 (recently discontinued due to low demand) I doubt H&R/NEF would even consider such a venture.
Sure wish I would have picked up a Camp 45 along with my Camp 9 back in the late 90's when they could be bought at "closeout prices".

Hi Point and Kel-Tec are having trouble keeping up with demand for pistol chambered carbines and Mek Tek (sp?) conversions are hot sellers, so there's more to the story.

I think the micro groove barrel question helped kill the Marlins. What killed the Rugers? Price? Special magazines? Wood stocks? (The wood stock on my Camp 45 is very poorly made.)

I agree, Chilachuck,

The Micro Groove rifling and wood Stock (crappy) where turn offs for me on both Marlin Camp Guns, while the price on the Ruger was too high.  If Marlin were to bring back the Camp Rifles with synthetic stocks, like the Rugers, and Ballard (sp) rifling, I think they would have a winner.  Especially if the 45ACP Camp Rifle used 1911 magazines.

I have a Hi Point 995 carbine (9mm) and love it. It cost me $200.00 OTD new. There is a strong market for moderate priced rifles that fires the ever popular 9mm, 40 S&W, & 45acp pistol cartridges.

Do you think there might be a highpoint carbine with a nice stock in .45 ACP for $200.00?....<><....:)

mrbgt,
You said "well it isn't a handi , but hi point firearms makes a 9 , .40 ,and are currently working on a .45 acp carbine"
I heard they have been working on a .45ACP  for quit some time.  Don't know for sure, that is what I have heard.

With the Hi Point .40SW, my source,a  gun dealer, hinted that the recoil was too much for most of his customers.  "I won't order anymore .40SW" he told my son.  I was looking for a Hi Point .40SW, but the ammo price is way more than a 9MM so I haven't ordered one yet.  I already have a Marlin 9MM carbine.

 skifastchad,
"I see on the mcace website, they have 18" barrel inserts in 9mm and 45acp for shotguns."
That looks good, but I haven't figured an accurate sight arrangement for a shotgun barrel, or at least one that would index well enough to be repeatable.  I guess one could put a scope or dot sight on a shotgun barrel and just leave the insert installed.  Would that be cheaper than a stub and barrel?

I will just keep working on my stubbing projects, including .30 carbine and .45ACP.

Thanks,
Paul

Oh, I love it. I bought two HiPoint 995s for $125 each back before they caught on. Played with them a little and stashed them.

No, I don't think any HiPoint carbine is going to be offered with a nice stock for anywhere near $200.

Thanks guys, back from Easter service and back on GB's...The gunsmith that did the work for me (stubbed SS .45 ACP barrel into a 20 gauge H&R donor barrel) usually does laminated stocks and custom beds the dedicated forearm to the barrel after completion of the metal work. I sent him an older wooden stock and forearm knowing that the wood in the older sets is much better than the palletwood used today and can be stained to almost exactly match walnut. When I get the gun back and after I shoot it a bit, I will change the rail I sent as a template for the holes to a H&R rail or a set of see through rings that I have which bolt directly to the H&R barrel without using a rail, then decide on the sighting system, a Red Dot or Holographic sight is envisioned. I will also decide on a final configuration of the stock, pistol grip or straight English style, refinish the stock and forearm to most likely a nice walnut color with an oil or matte finish. I have yet to decide if I will add a fiddleback feature to the appearance of the stock and forearm or not. I decided on having the SS barrel "bead" blasted with something the smith uses, a walnut blasting media, this gave the SS barrel just the finish I wanted and envisioned with a niceclassic oil finished walnut finished stock set. I am also planning to change the older red recoil pad out to a newer style. I am looking forward to a lot of fun plinking and walking the woods with my .45 ACP Handi. If the accuracy works out to what I expect it to be I may even try to take a coyote with it. The muzzle brake I chose to be added is a new style which allows the use of gas checked bullets with little or no chance of stripping the gas checks from the bullets as they exit the barrel. I have plans to use a lead gas checked Keith design semi wadcutter style bullet out of it. With that design, bullet weight, and large meplat there is no need for expansion....<><....:)

Thanks Joe and guys, and wonder of wonders it arrived today, a couple of days ahead of schedule!!! The fit and finish is impeccable and I really like the way it looks and feels, and so does my wife!! She was shocked by the size of the hole in the barrel and impressed by the beautiful muzzlebrake. I am sure this is one gun she will enjoy shooting, at least she said she would like to shoot it after looking at it and handling it. The shooting will have to wait until after my daughters wedding this coming weekend (03/29/08). A great daughter, a wonderful prospective son-in-law with a great family, AND the first ever in existence .45 ACP Handi, a man can only be so happy!!!.....<><....:)
