marlin 336 problem??

Im new to this website. But I have a marlin model 336 30-30 rifle thats probably 8 years old, but not really shot a whole lot for a marlin! And ive heard that when the riflings in a rifle wear out that your shots are all over the target. I was wondering if that's true and how for sure you could tell if there wore??? About 3 months ago, I put a simmons scope and Leupold scope rings on and there seems to be a problem zeroing it in. I can put two shots nearly in the same hole and then a couple rounds later i'll put two more rounds nearly in the same hole but there about 3 inches to the right. I have no idea what the problem is. Any help please?

Sounds like your scope to me.  I am not a fan of Simmons.  What you might try doing is whenever you make adjustments to your scope, give it a light tap just to make sure that the reticle isn't sticking and then settling into place when you fire a shot.

I would also check to make sure there is no play in your scope and the bases, and make sure the barrel isn't wandering in relation to the receiver.

Let your barrel cool between shots.  Wait at least two minutes before shooting the next round.

this is where id look first. If you dont know how to properly mount a scope bring it to a gunsmith. Also cheap scopes do fail and can have paralex problems and you might want to at least borrow a good scope and see if it helps. Id bet my entire gun collection agains that marlin that an 8 year old marlin does not have a worn out barrel. Ive seen lever guns with barrels ruined by black powder and ive seen them leaded so bad they looked shot out. but have yet to actually seen one that was worn out from shooting.

You put great rings on a very good rifle.  Didja run short of $$$$, when it came time for a scope ?

If you got that Simmons from a National retailer, box it up & return it - most will take back any unsatisfied customer's return, these days.

Then buy a quality scope - even a used one will perform better than a new cheapie.

Very well could be the scope, but try loosening your barrel bands........

     Not sure about a civilian rifle , but it takes several thousand rounds to wear out a military rifle barrel .

     I have a M1 Garand w/ a WWII receiver , 1948 barrel ( most likely rebarreled after WWII ) .  My guess is it must have went through Korea ?

     The sharp edges of rhe riflings are worn kind of rounded .

     A few years ago , when I could see better , it would do 2" at 100 yards w/ Lack City 69 USGI surplus ammo .

     My guess is it has had at least 5000 rounds down the tube .

     Most civilians can not / will not spend the $$$ to put enough rounds down the tube to wear it out .

     I also have military surplus bolt guns that have bores that are kind of sad looking , that shoot pretty good .
