Dry fire !
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:18:20 PM »
Has anyone ever mistakenly dropped the hammer on a empty chamber on the encore?

I did...sort of...was testing some loads...and mixed a dummy round (no primer) in the batch....gotta be more careful...

Hope I did not damage anything.....

The only thing you can harm is the firing pin return spring.

If you want to see if its ok just get a hex key and remove the firing pin carrier.  Takes about one minute.

What if the gun fires normally. Wouldn't it indicate it's ok then?

It probably is not harmed.  But you won't know until you take a look.  Its not complicated, takes a simple hex key and in under a minute you could have it out, look at it and put it back in.

I have dry fired mine.  Did not harm the spring at all.  I learned of this being harmful (some times) after the fact like you and so I took a look at it.

I understand that what happens is that it can collapse the spring and reduce the firing pin retraction capability of the spring.  In a bad case it can cause the firing pin to stick or cause a soft strike.
