Super 16 Question

I'm gonna show my ignorance here , but is the super 16 a rifle barrel or hand gun barrel.......just wondering ??  Thanks

The answer is yes.  It can be used on either a handgun frame or a rifle frame, since it is long enough to be legal as a rifle barrel.  I use mine as rifle barrels, more than 14" is probably too much for a portable handgun, although I do have a couple 15" Contenders.

I have one in 17 HMR but like was stated is to heavy for a hand gun mine came on a contender rifle. one other thing the 2 screw fore end for the 12 and 14 inch barrel holes do not line up so you will need a rifle fore end in order to use both screws. I did use a super 14 inch fore end on mine for a while but had to drill a small hole in the fore end barrel grove so that the log on barrel would let the barrel drop down all the way in the slot just drilled it the depth of the lug but you still can use only one screw.I think the super 16 was meant for rifle as the barrel lugs are spaced further apart than on a pistol barrel hope this makes sense.

I have a ? along the same lines. I bought a contender frame as a super 16 in about 1999 ( easy open ). I just recently bought a 45/70 super 16 barrel. The super 16 fore end holes are too far apart to attach it to the barrel. The barrel appears to have the same hole spacing as a super 14 barrel. Has anyone ran into this problem ?

rpharder, The S-16 barrel was introduced in 1989 in 22lr, 22mag, .223Rem, 7 x 30Waters, .30/30win, 35Rem, .44mag, 45-70, and 45Colt/.410. Like the 21" carbine barrel introduced several years before, it had one screw boss for the forend.  According to the illustrations in the catalogs,  both the 21" and 16" went to two screws in 1992.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

Walt, Thanks for the good info. Jeff, I believe that the 45-70 barrel did use the Super 14 forend.

My 45-70 barrel uses the regular S-16/Carbine forend.  The catalog did show 45-70 barrels cost more because they were more expensive to make ...$15.00 I think.  Walt

rural17, TC was famous for making short runs of barrels with a "little" difference.  I have heard of this one before(14" screw spacing on 16" and 21" barrels).  My 16" 45-70 barrel has two screws,  regular 16" spacing, and an old style soldered on front sight.  I can't remember ever seeing a barrel longer than 10" with that sight.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt

Both, I just sold a 223 Super 16 that had a single screw holding the forend in place.  That barrel was purchased new in the mid-80's.  I believe later they went with 2 screws

Hopalong7, Thanks for the info. This is a stainless super 16 with a muzzlebrake. The front site has 2 screws so I am assuming it is a newer one? Also appears that you could mount the rear site in 2 different positions, all the way back and about 1/3 of the way down the barrel. I'm not sure of the purpose for this? Maybe for mounting a scope and using it as a carbine?

I recently picked up a Super 16 in .223. I had plans of mounting a bi-pod on a rifle forend and use it on a pistol set-up. Of course it'll be way to heavy to carry as a handgun, except for setting up in a field for chucks, or punching holes at the range.

Anyone tried this? or had any luck putting a bi-pod on a contender barrel?
