Hi Point 995 Carbine Light Options
« on: December 27, 2007, 04:44:48 AM »
I just got one of these for Christmas and now want to add a low power scope (which I've got on hand) and a "weapon light" of some sort.

I see that Hi Point offers a 3/4" accessory ring but don't know if that'll work with the type of mounted light I'm envisioning. Anyone make a 3/4" diameter light? Are there 1" (or whatever) accessory mount options that I can use with this rifle?

Thanks. -WSJ

Check with Midway and Brownells for a selection of sights. CheaperThanDirt and SportsmansGuide also carry some of the lights. As to mounts I am really not aware.. Contact the maker(importer) and ask what they provide. My only experience with the HighPoint guns was a 9mm Version that a friend owned. We scoped it and it shot amazingly well. I think I'd prefer a reflex sight for this application. Lights are OK but they surely do define your position to an intruder..

I'm less concerned about giving my position away to a potential intruder than I am having a rifle-mounted light that I can use to shoot the coons and possums that my girlfriend's attracting to the barn and outbuildings by feeding the barn cats (thanks, but shooting the cats isn't an option although it did occur to me and caused be to suggest naming the new Hi Point "Miss Kitty," which didn't go over well either).

I did call Hi Point but they're on holiday vacation until 1/2.  Hopefully they'll be able to tell me something.  I'll probably just order their accessory mount and see what size it is and what it'll fit.  The solution might be hanging a mini Mag light on the thing, in keeping with the overall low tech theme.  -WSJ

I hope I got it sorted out.  Here's what I ended up with if anyone's interested:

I bought an AimSHOT TX75 Xenon Illuminator light, which has an on/off/momentary switch at the rear, 3.25 oz., 4.9 in. length, 1.12 in diameter, a very intense 120 lumens.  $55 + shipping @Azeotek.

I also ordered AimSHOT's universal rail light & green laser mount (elongated Weaver style 1" mount, $10) and a on/off pressure switch with 8" cord ($11).  Didn't end up needing or using either.

Then I ordered Hi Point's compensator and accessory rail ($20 from Hi Point, incl. shipping), which I was told would fit accessories from 3/4" to 1" in diameter.  It didn't - it's strictly for 3/4" accessories like a red laser.  I mounted the accessory rail below the barrel, although I suppose it could be mounted to one side or the other since the compensator just slides over the barrel and is held/pinched in place by a single screw.

However the compensator's point of attachment for the mount turned out to be a standard 3/8" 22 style dovetail and I couldn't use the Weeaver style mount.  I had a selection of 1" rimfire rings to choose from.  I tried a Simmons and Tasco, both of which worked, but then found an old set of Tasco see-through mounts.  This ring was slightly wider than the other 2 and of course is forward end of the compensator and the rear (where the on/off switch is located) is just slightly below the bottom of the forend.  There's room to remove the cap and batteries without taking the light or mount off the gun.

Because the Hi Point carbine is so short, I've no need of the on/off pressure switch.  It's very comfortable to just push the light's momentary on/off button with my left forefinger when I'm holding the rifle.

So I've got a low tech weapon light mounted for the cost of the light, the compensator, and whatever one half of a 20 year old set of Tasco see-through rimfire rings cost me.  And I ended up with some spare parts that'll no doubt find a home on something else, somewhere and some time: the AimSHOT universal Weaver sytyle mount wouldn't work with the Hi Point compensator (wish they'd told me at Hi Point that the accessory thingy mounted to the compensator via a standard dovetail!), the pressure switch for an aimshot light that I'll keep it in case I put that light or another on something else, a Hi Point accessory mount, and one 3/8" dovetail 1" ring.

I haven't shot it since the add-ons so I don't know if it'll shoot to the same POI or whether accuracy has changed.  I bet it'll work just fine for home protection and shots <40 yards.  I can post a photo or two (maybe) if anyone's interested.  -WSJ

WSJONES I'd certainly love to see the HiPoint.  A good friend has one but went with a low powered scope. The accuracy of that thing is a little scary.. They are also a lot more user friendly for the less experienced shooter in a defense situation. Can't help with the picks though. I am still having computer problems.. Time for an upgrade.. but I'm still tapped out from Christmas and property taxes.

Here (maybe) is a picture of the light set-up: [img][https://www.gboreloaded.com/mhp/images/wsjones/img1027.jpg/[img]

I shot about 3 boxes of Winchester white-box 115 gr. fmj ammo through it last weekend and it shot to the same level of accuracy and same poi as before the light was added.  About 5 different folks shot it, ranging from very experience to novice and everyone was able to break clay pigeons set out at 25-42 yards.

As it's set up the most expensive thing on it's the light, with the Burriz Z 3/8" dovetail rings the next priciest thing.  But I had them on hand and they're nice, unobtrusive rings.  The scope's a 4x Leapers mini, which I got from Natchez Shooters Supply on clearance for $15 or $19 or something like that.  I already had one on a Ruger 10/22 and  bought 4 of them on clearance, so now I've got them on a Henry 22 lever, the Hi-Point, a Savage MK II 22, and a Marlin 336 35 Rem.

Aha!  Figgered out the pesky photo thing by actually reading instructions!
