Hi cap Mini magazines?

Ok, now that I'm pretty sure I want a semi-auto in 6.8 rem, we come to the question of high capacity magazines.  Since Ruger will only sell 5 rounders to non Law Enforcement, are there aftermarket suppliers for magazines for the Mini 14 and Mini 30?  If there are, I could expect them to gear up for the 6.8 in the near future.  (Assuming they can get a good return back before the Democrats get in office and we end up with Brady II.)  This will end up deciding between a Mini in 6.8 or an AR.  44 Man

There are aftermarket mags available for the Ruger Mini-14 and Mini-30.  They are a major crapshoot.  I had some that were pitiful and some that were good.  Forget about using any "polymer" (CHEAP PLASTIC CRAP) mags. 

That said, I've had a mini, and you'd have to be crazy to pick one over an AR.  The accuracy I got was piss-poor, and it would not fire Wolf ammunition consistently because the primer was too hard.  This problem is common to all minis.  I sold the rifle and have no plans to buy another.

I've heard that the Mini 30s had poor accuracy, but so did my AK that I owned.  About 6" at 100 yds was all I could expect!  I have read that Ruger has tightened up the accuracy on the .223's and that the new 6.8 will shoot 1" to 1 1/2" at 100 yds.  44 Man

44 man,I own one of the newer minis(ser # 580+) in .223 Remy.Mine will stay in a 3" circle at 100 yrdsw/ both factory and home brewed ammo.If you want much better than that you might want to go to an AR.On your AK w/6" at 100 yrds;that was what it was built for.How big is a man's chest?I bought several 10 and 20 round mags(metal) off Ebay several months back for this guy and they have all worked without a hitch.You might want to look into this.Also "Cheaper Than Dirt" is also another opition.Good luck.......Rick

Well yes, hitting a man's chest at 100 yds is easy with a rife that will shoot 6" at 100 yds.  But I also want a rifle that I can use to take deer if necessary.  Usually that means 35 to 70 yds, but sometimes that is between trees that are only 2" apart.  And it can also sometimes mean that a shot is offered at 150 or 175 yds.  Where I hunt I have the opportunity for either.  So I could accept a gun that would shoot 3" at 100 yds but a little less would please me no end.  44 Man

I own a MINI-30 and have bought several high cap mags. My experience has been : Mec-Gar make the best (best being in terms of consistent feeding); The higher the capacity (over 20 rds.) the more jamming occurs; The best I have used are 10 rounders and the 20 rd. Mec-Gar. Of course the type of ammo matters also - the best feeding for me is either Win or Rem but they are also much more expensive than Wolf etc.

I have a stainless  Mini14 that will eat any brand of ammo out of the factory-5, or aftermarket 10,20, or 30 round mags AS LONG AS THEY ARE METAL.   It does not like the plastic pieces of bovine feces at all. 

That being said, I can load the 55 gr fmj stuff and expect 3-4" at 100 yards.    However for hunting I found this little carbine loves the 64 gr Winchester power points.    It will keep the spread down to 1 1/2" all day with these loads. It works quite well on wild hogs in the neck/ear.

I consider  it  a good SHTF gun as well as a decent hunting tool.

  No one makes 6.8mm specific mags for the mini, but from what I've read and been told by owners is the mini 30 mags work fine. I've had good luck with 10 round ProMags in my mini 30 as have many others. We've talked about the 580 HBar accuracy on another thread, so I won't go into that again. As for the wolf ammo, If you must use it, buy a $250 AK, no one in their right mind would run lacquer-covered steel cased ammo through a $750 rifle, let alone a $1000 AR. If accuracy is what you want, $5 a box, cheap, steel-cased Russian surplus military ammo will no doubt disappoint you anyways. If it's a need you can't beat, I'm sure there are extra-power hammer springs available for mini from several vendors.    I forgot to add that, as far as I know, Wolf doesn't make 6.8 ammo. So if 6.8 is what you want, that point is moot.
