 i have tried many kinds of factory ammo in my survivor 223 1-9 twist with mostly terrible results. 55gr. american eagles shoot 5inch groups at 50 yards. whitebox shoots 4 inch at 100, which is alot better. federal 55gr. is about the same. i found that rem.55gr. hollow point bullets on top 22grs of 3031 will shoot 1.25 at 100yards. one 3shot group at 50 had 2 rounds in one hole, which i have never done before with any rifle!  just thought this might help someone else with this type of accuracy problem..

Hey fungunner:
Don't know anything about the survivor .223.   Is that a new, or used rifle?   Sounds like it doesn't like that particular weight.   How about trying a variety of heavier bullets for that 1-9 twist.

its a new one but i have about 300 rounds through it. it looks to me that heavier bullets are the next thing. it seems the fast twist likes slower speed rounds.

Thanks for posting your results...

I just recently picked up a Handi in .223 "ultra varmint" and have been getting it ready to shoot...




I've been reading (searched posts) here hoping to hear of something that shoots well in the 1 in 9 twist barrel (but NOT finding much results).

I've got the rifle ready and still plan to polish the bore (before heading out the first time) and will have 40, 50, 52 , 53, 55, 60, 62, 68, and 75gr loads to try...  SOMETHING has got to shoot out of this gun - and I plan to find it, else I'll sell the darn thing and buy a Savage 10 FP in .223 - since my .308 10 FP can shoot half-MOA.

I just placed my bullet order today (with Midway) so I'll be needing time to get loads ready.  I'm also disabled and have many days that I cann not go to shoot.  Sorry for that - but I will make up for it with strict and carefully measured results.  The scope is a cheap Bushnell and it will be replaced with a Burris FFII - when the money and mortgages says OK..

         have had poor groups with factory ammo real good luck 40 gr hdy v-max with bl-c2 and accurate 1680  col 2.190

My 1 in 12 bull barrel Handi never cared much for factory ammo except the Rem Green Box 55s but once i started to handload for it things came around nicely , for now my go-to load is 25.5 grains of IMR4895 under a 55 grain Hornady V-max with CCI 400 SRPs . This load will on any day give under 3/4" , 3 shot groups @ 100 yards .

From what i have seen and heard the the 1-9's don't care for the above 62's any better than the 1-12's do but all will shoot the 45, 50 , 52 , 53 and 55 grain bullets very well .

Many Thanks Tim.  You're highly regarded by members of another (reloading) forum I frequent, so your input is most appreciated.

I just ordered a wide variety of 40, 50, 52, 53, 55, 60, 62, 68, and 75gr bullets from Midway to experiment around with.  Suffice to say, I'll have my hands full for a while!  ;D

I'm looking forward to seeing what the handi is capable of.. :)

Fungunner - my apology for the slight hi-jack of your thread.  I'll try and make it up by posting results of my forthcoming handloads..
