Getting started list for a new guy?
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:08:13 PM »
Well, I finally decided on the Lyman Deerstalker, and picked one up last Friday for $289.00.  I picked up some powder (2F and 4F), extra flints, bullets (240 gr), and a bullet starter.   Is their a list somewhere on the forum for new guys to reference who are starting out?  I know their are many other items I must pick up, and I need some help/advice here.  I am guessing this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in the forum.

Also, if there are articles or books that anyone might recommend, I would appreciate it.  I am already thinking about that second season for flintlockers in late December here in Pennsylvania.

Thanks.

Congratulations on your entry into the wonderful world of Muzzleloading.  Here's some good basic reading for you.  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/hunter_education/homestudy/muzzleloader/index.phtml

I'm assuming your rifle is new.  If so there should have been a manual with your rifle.  You should take a good look at the information in your manual.  I think you would be happier using patched balls with your flintlock.

I'm sure everyone here will be happy to help you in any way they can.

Hey flip17, I recommend the first thing you do is replace the Lyman touch hole liner with a RMC liner.  The RMC is installed with an Allen Wrench and the socket for the wrench makes a funnel-like area for the flame to reach the charge.  Also, the RMC liner has a slightly larger flash hole.   The RMC gives me fast and sure ignition in my Lyman Great Plains.

Try this link.  (Click on "Blackpowder Shooting Accessories" and scroll down to touch hole liner replacements.)

pick up a cleaning jag for you caliber  as ell as  cleaning solutions  and patches .
i would also recommend a Co2 discharger with a flintlock needle/adaptor .  It will come in handy .
You will also need a powder measure  .never load from the horn .
You also should get or make you a vent pick that will fit all the way through your liner.
Also  IMO one should steer away from the cut aget flints  . While the do spark  and often well , they also eat up your frizzen . Get you some English flints or French ambers .
