Question about AR-15 Uppers

I have an AR-15 with an old Colt upper without the forward assist that I think was manufactured around 1965 - 1967.  I have a chance to swap for a newer upper of same condition.  My question is, Are the old uppers without the forward assist worth more than a newer with one.  I am not sure of the manufacture of the newer upper.  Dom

Don't know what it's worth, but if it were mine I'd hang on to it! The fact that someone wants to trade you out of it leads me to believe he's getting the best end of the deal! Have it appraised by someone knowledgeable who is not trying to trade you out of it, to find out what it's worth.  Or get a book of gun values. Then you can make a good decision to trade or not.  Ask this question on AR15.com as well.

Personally, I would not trade it off unless you know the value of it.  There are a lot of people out there looking for exactly what you have for doing retro builds.  I would try AR15.com.  There are a lot of knowledgeable people there that could help you out.

The older Colt upper, if in good condition and complete, is worth a new upper in trade. A genuine older style Colt upper for a retro build is very sought after. The trade should minimally net you a good namebrand upper such as Rock River or Stag, complete with BUIS. If the upper you own is pristine, you may even engineer a trade for a new Colt or LMT upper. The AR15.com site will clearly indicate this and I would suggest going there for information and perhaps even for your trade. I have seen some of the industry partners make trades so they can build a retro.

arfcom is a great resource. You can also try looking at what they go for on gunbroker.  There are a lot of a1 uppers for sale on there recently.

Thanks for the info.  I decided to not make the trade and keep what I have.  My only reason for trading was to have an upper with a forward assist and I was told by a few on the AR15 forum that the forward assist is not a necessity and the SP1 upper is worth more.  Dom
