SB1-S35 ream to .357 MAXI
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:04:10 AM »
Will the SB1 frame take the pressure of a .357 MAXI round?

The working pressure for the 357 Mag is 46K cup for the 357 MAX it is 48K. That does not seem to be very much difference. I think that there is load data that exceeds this for the 357 MAX. Ruger quit making the 357 MAX in their revolvers because of gas cutting on the back strap. They recommend a small rifle primer for the MAX and a pistol primer for the MAG. To me that is enough to nix the 357 MAX on a SB1 frame. H&R will not put a 22 hornet or a 30-30 barrel on an SB1 frame and they have less pressure that the 357 MAG, so cup measurement is not the only thing they look at. If you want a 357 Max, buy a gun with a SB2 frame and send it in for a 357 barrel. Good Luck and good shooting, but above all be safe. ;)

Alan, I tried my 357max barrel (before it became a 35 Rem) on a 2003 Topper SB1 frame a few years ago, I shot about 6 rounds of the Dan Wesson factory ammo thru it, all had pierced primers, the larger shotgun firing pin and surrounding hole makes the SB1 frame unsuitable for the higher pressure of even pistol rounds, you have to remember that shotgun pressures are no higher the 14kpsi. Please see the rifle barrel on a shotgun frame info in the FAQs, it's not worth life and limb to save a few bucks, follow LaOtto's advice and get an SB2 frame for the Max.  ;)

Exactly what I needed to know.
If I decide to do a .357 MAX it will be an SB2.

Appreciate the sage advice.
