Kano Kroil Question

 ??? Good afternoon all,

I just bought my first can of Kroil.  I have no doubt it is great stuff.  Question - How is it for multipurpose use for everything, Cleaning and Protection?  Is it a good rust preventative?  My guess is it would be to penetrative to have it any where near ammo.  So it's use may be limited to just cleaning bores.  Any info would be great.  Thanks Old Moss  8)

Ed's Red the benchresters bore cleaner favorite is ATF, mineral spirits and Kroil. I wouldn't use it on or near ammo but most bore cleaners are not a good idea is such quarters. The ATF provides a great lubricating oil(and the red color in the mix, DEXRON), it's all I use anymore for gneral purpose lubrication. Kroil is tremendously penetrating. I have a M12 heavy duck with the stock bolt rusted completely tight. Thought I might have to cut the head off and replace the stock bolt.. Kroil dripped into the stock bolt hole, just a few drops, and left to set for a week and the bolt just simply unscrewed.. Amazing stuff!!

Kroil is a poor rust preventative, there are many good protectants available, save the Kroil for cleaning. ;)

Gunnut,

The formula I have for Ed's Red is equal parts of  Dexron ATF,  K1 Kerosene, Aliphatic Mineral Spirits, and Acetone (and optionally 1 lb. of Anhydrous Lanolin per gallon) from a number of web sites.  I haven't seen one before that uses Kroil, where did you find this recipe?

I'm unsure just now where I saw that recipe but believe it was an 'American Gunsmith' newsletter..  The recipe I saw wasn't equal parts as they were making it up in several hundred gallon lots and repackaging for sale.. I don't remember the K-1 and wonder if it wouldn't gum badly as Kerosene dries to a gun if allowed to set as does WD-40. I'll see if I can locate the article.. Haven't seen anhydrous lanolin in a recipe for years.. The old gunsmithing books often referred to it.. One would have to fins a real drug store (not just a pill dispensary) and be friendly to get them to order it.. I found such a place and was going to get the ingredients we once used to color hard maple, nitric acid, potassium permanganate and chromium trioxide. He looked and they were available but the hazardous materials fees were horrid, plus the minimum amounts would have been prohibitively expensive for just staining and coloring a few maple stocks..

It's available online and where soap making supplies can be found, you may find it in a local health food/herbal shop.

My friends and I haven't had a problem, and I wonder if the other ingredients alter the chemistry to where it isn't a problem.  Of course, it could be that my rifles don't sit around enough for it to become a problem...

According to http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm, K1 Kerosene was an ingredient in the original Hoppes #9 so I don't think that there's much danger of the gumming problem...

The lanolin was only suggested if you intended to use it for long-term storage (a year or longer).  I've never included it because I haven't felt the need (so I can't comment on its availability).  Leaving it out also makes the recipe a good bit less expensive, which suits me just fine :-)

Ditto that!!! I've been using it in machine shops for years and as far as penetration goes, nothing beats this stuff.
