Which 2X Scope for 44 mag out to 100 yards?
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:07:46 AM »
From a previous post by another member, it is apparent that the 2x scope wins the battle.
What 2x would you recommend for deer on a 44 mag out to 100 yards. I have had several Leupold 2x scopes and they are very good except for the common problem of having to search for the cross hairs in a black hole when it is slightly misaligned.
Maybe I just have to live the black hole.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I ordered three scope on-line and settled on the Leupold 2x.  First class item.  Customer service is almost beyond belief wonderful.

Leupold's are the only scopes I buy. I due have 3 suggestions for you. 1. Practice 2. practice and 3. practice. Scoped handguns are not near as easy to get used to as scoped rifles.
Look at your target with both eyes open and then come down in frount of your eyes with your gun. When the scope is in line with your eye you will see through the scope and the cross hairs should be on target, or very close.

I've tried the Nikon Monarch 2X in the past and I appreciated it's compact size. I've always been partial to the Bushnell Trophy 2x on my 44 Contenders. Unfortunately they are not available in blued finish any longer. I'm going to try the Weaver 2X the next time around.

I don't have any experience with the Nikon Monarch 2X or the Bushnell Trophy 2x but, have owned the Leupold 2X scope and thought it superb? As others have suggested to you, practice is the key to quick acquisition.

Revolver Nuts,

I know you want a 2x 'scope, but why not get a 2x-7x (or thereabouts) and have the advantage of higher powers, but still have the 2x that you want.  I only have one (1) fixed power 'scope on many of my 'scoped handguns and it isn't one of my favorites.  Variables are dang difficult to beat.  Good-luck...BCB

Scopes and optics on handguns all have the problem of finding the "dot", or crosshairs.

Point the gun from your chest (elbows bent) with the grip low and the muzzle high. Put the front sight, or end of the muzzle on the target. As you straighten your arms push the gun towards the target and bring the rear of the gun up.

You should find the dot in the middle of the tube as you get to shooting position. It requires a little practice, but beats twirling the end of the barrel around looking for the dot.

If your barrel is short, substitute the end of the scope tube for the front sight. Works pretty well.

I use Weaver 2x and Burris 2X and a 2-7, I like them all and never have had any issues with them over several hundred rounds on a 44mag and 454, mounted on revolvers, single shots and a desert eagle.

I have nothing against Leupold, I own several for my rifles, but have just never purchased one for my handguns.

I should have added - keep both eyes open too as suggested by other posters.

I would have to caution anyone having trouble with sight picture on a quality fixed 2x scope from moving into a variable until becoming comfortable with the fixed scope: the effect is even more severe.

Ditto on the Burris 2X.  I have one on my SRH 480.  I've put about a hundred or so rounds of factory and about 250 rounds of handloads through it without any troubles so far.  Off a rest, it runs <1" at 25 yds and about 3" groups at 100yds.
Success is a journey, not a destination...  Might as well enjoy the ride!!

I managed to get to the range the other day. With this thread in mind I took my .41 mag 10" and .223 14" barrels. The 41 has a2x7 scope and the 223 a straight 7x. Remember now ,I had a bit of montezumas revenge for 2 days prior!Any way my NORMAL shooting with these guns is well under an inch at 50 yards, rested and less than 6 inches at 100 off hand. NOT that day!! I could barely keep 3 shots (not 5) in 6 inches rested. I tried to get on the 4" target off hand with the 41 scope turned down to 2x and could hardly keep the thing steady. All this to say you MUST practice a LOT to keep abilities and expectations high. A bad day can happen to any one and you don't want to wound the animal.

i shot two handguns today both with burris 2x. one a 44 mag viriginian 6" (scope was on it when i got it) and an encore handgun 15" 7mm08. them buuris' are nice. if i had to recomend one it would be the above mentioned scope, although the bushnell trophy 2-6 also presents a nmice image and weaver also makes a good handgun scope. i would also give one of the trophy dots a look or better yet the ultra dot.

no matter the choice, as stated before practice, practice, practice. good shootin dan

Just bought a 2x weaver for my .41 mag.  To me it had the best combinations of of getting on target and optics.
