Which cal. is best?
« on: July 27, 2003, 12:47:14 PM »
I plan on purchasing a Lone Eagle pistol from CDNN within the week.  They have the following choices of calibers 30-30 Win, 7mm-08, 44 Magnum, or 357 Maximum.  I plan on using the pistol for deer or hog sized game.  Which caliber would be the best for hunting that game in S.E. Oklahoma (typically a wooded area)?
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer,
Curdean

Cknight98,
Thank you for your help.  You mentioned other platforms, which one's were you referencing? As I am open to suggestions.  I would rather spend a little more cash now, and avoid frustrations later.
Thank you,
Curdean

cknight98,
Thank you again for the advice.  I should have a Lone Eagle delivered to my FFL tomorrow.  I went with the 7mm-08 based on your and other opinions I have recieved.  Now I just need to practice and get ready for deer season.
Thanks
Curdean

I'd recommend a repeater for hog hunting, unless all of your shots will be from a stand or at a considerable distance.  Aside from that, if you're going to get a single-shot, get one that shoots a good rifle cartridge.  If that gun recoils anything like a 44 magnum Contender, then you're probably better off with the 7-08 and some good bullets. The recoil may be comparable but it will be a much more powerful round.

I agree - if it's hogs, then get a revolver.

If your shots are going to be within 100 yards, then you might also want to consider the .480 Ruger.  I have one in a Taurus RB and it's great.  It kicks a little bit more than the .44, but it has much more power than the .44 and a lot less kick than the .454 Casull.  Then again, the .454 Casull could fit the bill very well too - if you can handle the recoil. :)

On the other hadn, if you will be taking shots that average in the 100 yard range, then I would opt for the 7mm-08.
