at what point would you say?
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:42:25 PM »
on what point or which game would you say- richard lay down your 257 weatherby magnum and pick up your 270 winchester? 120 gn nosler in 257 or 130 gn nosler in 270.

Whenever I was in the mountains and the 257 was a much heavier rifle to carry.

When you have to buy $40 a box ammo for the WBY

But if you're a handloader like m my advice would be to sell the 270 and buy an even better scope for the 257wby. then I would just use the weatherby on everything.

In my opinion the critters you would or wouldn't shoot with either pretty much are the same.e

Both of them would have been sold a long time ago because I'd have my .280 w/140gr NP's.

Personally I don't believe there is ever a time or place where the .270 Winchester with a 130 grain bullet is superior to the .257 Whby. magnum with a premium 120. Step things up to a 150 in the .270 now and that's a different matter entirely. While not everyone agrees I'd confine the .257 Whby. to deer sized game or maybe smaller elk cows and I personally would do the same with the 130s in the .270. I want more bullet weight for larger tougher game myself.

120 gn nosler in 257 weatherby magnum vs 130 gn nosler in 270 winchester.

fc, If you are comparing NPTs with NPTs, I'd say the biggest difference will be the price of the ammo!

Yep!!  After all, the 25 cal. 120 gr. part. has a SD of .260 & the 130gr. 270 has a SD of .242. So, the 257 with those bullets compared would penetrate better & with allmost 200fps edge the Wea. would be flatter, like GB said the 270/130 gr. would not be better in any way.

The 140 gr. 270 matches the 120 gr. 257 in SD & your energy starts going up & things change, ditto for the 150. I would use a bigger round if I
was hunting Bull Elk as a personal preference anyway as I have more suitable rounds for that.

My 257wby is my go to gun. I have a 270 but I just seem to grab the 257 most of the time. In reality, most of what I do is deer hunt and I really could be a one or two gun guy, but that would not be much fun at all.

If you are planning on shooting anything bigger, like elk or moose and the 270 can handle a bigger bullet well.  That is when I would tell you to lay down the .257.

That's why I say get rid of them both and get a .280.  Load a 160gr ball for your elk and 140's for deer.  Or maybe 150's for everything.  I did kill 1 cow with a 150 but if I were loading a .280 to go elk hunting, I'd opt for a 160.

BTW, Rem has a couple of 257 Wea. out now.

Are you sure about that "couple" comment? I'm aware of one and have one "supposedly" on order but wonder if I'll actually get it. From what I can understand this is a VERY LIMITED edition rifle that only select dealers will get any of and the guy I have it on order with is not yet sure if he will get one at all.

What is the other half of the couple you mention? Maybe it's less limited in production and is what I should be trying for. I really want a Remington 700 in .257 Whby. Mag. That was old Roy's favorite of all his chamberings and he used it on most everything including stuff that most of us would consider way too much animal for a .25 caliber.

EDIT: Yer right I just went to their site and found that they now have the CDL SF listed in addition to the LSS which is the one I REALLY REALLY REALLY want  badly. I missed the limited edition LSS in .280 Remington last year cuz they just couldn't get one or didn't get one for me. I figure the same will happen this year on the LSS .257 Whby. Mag.

Bill, either would be very nice & they are even offering the correct barrel length for the cartridge, unlike the Wea. Vangard.

We have discussed this before. Trying to write more like we speak. Sometimes exaggeratedly so for humor. Writing in the vernacular, so to speak..................... whatever that means?   ???

GB, nomo,

LOL - Think you guys are really trying to split hairs!

This seems to be going toward the same direction as many a 270 vs 30/06 debates.

Think about your arguments "in reverse"!:

If the 257/120 round is so much better than a 270/130 round because the SD of the 257 Wby is 0.18 higher (i.e. .260 vs .242),

then the 270/150 round must be that much better than the 257/120 because the SD of the 270 is 0.17 higher!

Now, throw in the fact that penetration with similar bullets can actually decrease as velocity increases.  Also, some where in there is bullet diameter should be a small factor in wound hole size?

Good luck guys sorting this one out.  I'm thinking its going to come down to which ever one you may prefer.

I like both rounds alot & I don't see a reason to split hairs at all, just answering the original question as to the specific bullet weights mentioned. Other bullet weights up and down the scale would change the situation as to which is better for certain situations.

Nothing really to sort out, it is what it is.

The .257 Wea. would be better for some chores & the .270 Win. for others.

Nomo, don't take my comments too seriously.

I've been listening to four friends at work debate - 3 are sold on the 270 Winchester and the other is bent on collecting rifles in a bunch of "hot rod" calibers.  He has a 6mm/284, a 6.5/284, a 7mm STW and a 300 RUM.  He's got a 257 Wby on order and now is already off on dreams of a 270/300 Wnny.  LOL - The 3 are really giving this guy hell on every point he makes.  You may find it hard to believe but I've actually stayed out of the debate (hazing) - Preferring to enjoy the listening from the sidelines.  Guess I really don't get too excited much any more when these discussions pop up and there is less than 10% difference in velocity, bullet weight and SD.

Any way, good luck again.

These types of questions are always difficult to respond to without creating a heated debate because they are all choices, personal choices and each person has a valid reason, at least in his own mind, for his choice. Beyond that, it is all rhetoric.

In whichever two cartridges are ever compared with their respective 'advantages', there is virtually little detectable difference upon application. Getting beyond the paper performance, putting the properly constructed bullet into the proper place is where the rubber meets the road. This is where it either goes in the freezer or gets away. Either cartridge of any of these 'comparisons' will do the job - so which one do 'you' want to use? That's really all it is and forget the bickering. I haven't met an elk yet that cared about BC or SD or ES or FPS. My biggest bull went down with a 200gr NPT from an 8mm carbine; my biggest cow took a hit from a 32WSpl with a 182gr cast from wheelweights. For sure neither are powerhouses, but they both did their jobs as requested, with little fanfare.
