Need winchester M94 front sight info.
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:52:47 PM »
Hi,  I have a bit of a problem, I have a  Winchester M94  circa 1950 (32 spl) and the bead has been broken off the front sight.   Now all the sights I can find at Brownells, are too wide (all marbles are .340 wide), or too narrow or too wide. (williams are .250 or .340), the width of the broken sight is .290.  what do i do, just buy the .340 wide site and  take .025 off each side?

First please try calling Browning-Winchester at 1-800-945-1392 (last known number I have for Winchester parts) and see if they can replace the front sight.  HTH.  Mikey.

Also check with Gun Parts Corp. for an original replacement.

FYI - All current replacement sights, by Marble's/Lyman/Williams/etc, are made in various heights & only three widths: .531" for direct barrel installation; .340" for most sight ramps, and .250" for narrow ramps like the Williams Shorty.

Lyman uses code numbers to designate widths & bead size:
The #3 is designed to be mounted into the barrel dovetail.
The #31 and #37 are designed to mount on ramps.
#3 and #31 have a 1/16" bead while #37 has a 3/32" bead.

The only direct barrel dovetail-mounted front sights I've seen, that were not a little proud of the dovetail on both sides, are the soldered/welded posts on Browning B-92's & some Winchester Trappers.

I've never seen a medium-width ramp that a .340" wide sight wouldn't fit exactly, widthwise.
