The heavier the bullet the better they work without gas checks. Short ones, which have marginal bearing length for accuracy will not shoot accurate without checks except at lower velocites.
The main things to know is that there is no danger. Some guns and bullets shoot better than others when checks are left off. I've found that with my midweight to heavy WFN's most will perform better with gas checks off and the check shank filled with lube than an identical length plain base. Not much better, but some.
