New Versa Pak
« on: April 03, 2008, 04:30:50 PM »
I just picked up a versa pack tonight complete with bag.  It does not look like either barrel has ever been fired... but not sure.

I have not seen where anyone has actually talked about grouping.  So how does the .22 shoot, and what kind of ammo do these barrels like?  My son has a .243 youth and I was planning to put the .22 on that with a twin scope for crow  hunting.  Is this a bad idea, is there anything I am not thinking about?

I am correct that there is no way to safely shoot a 30-30 or .308 on that receiver, right?  What about a .357 or >44 mag barrell. I thought I read that the handgun barrells would work on the shot gun receivers...any chance that would work?

Can you shoot slugs through a full choke .410?  I know some .410's can shoot 45 long colts, can a .410 pardner with a full choke shoot the 45's?

Don't ask what I paid,  I some day may want to sell all or part.

Thanks for your help?

Welcome to GBO! Shotgun frames can't be used with rifle barrels, they aren't made for the pressures and the larger firing pin and surrounding hole can cause perforated primers. The 22Lr barrel may or may not fit on the SB2 243 frame

Be safe and shoot .410 ammo in the .410 barrel, get a .410/45 Colt or 45 Colt carbine barrel fitted to the SB2 243 frame if you want to shoot 45 Colt ammo, the 410 shotgun barrel isn't meant to do that, H&R won't fit any barrels to the Versa-pak frame.

Please read the FAQs and Help sticky, lots of your questions will be answered there, particularly about SB1 shotgun vs SB2 rifle frames.

What caused my confusion is that the inside of the receiver is stamped with a big 2 on the left hand side.  I did not know there may have been some that were shipped with a SB2.

I am not the only one that is not straight on the can and can not's.  I bought my .243 and a youth 20 gauge camo lam from Cabellas on the same day.  The guy that sold them to me told me that the cool thing is that I could switch the barrels back and forth between them.

Shotgun barrels can be used on SB2 frames, but rifle barrels can't be used on SB1 frames, the rifle/shotgun combos have SB2 frames.

Maybe you need to modify that statement to read the Centerfire rifle/shotgun combos (except the new 2008 .44 & .357 combo) have SB2 frames.  Because the rimfire (with offset bore) rifle/shotgun combo [Versa Pak] come on a SB1 frame.

With so many exceptions I can see where people get confused.  And ignorant sells persons don't help the matter either.

Yes, that's true!! EXCEPT for the new production 44mag and 357mag and their combo counterparts, 44mag/12ga and 357mag/20ga combos that now come on SB1 frames.  Those firearms can only be used with those barrels, they have specific exclusions mentioned in the catalog and on the website.

thanks Doug,

*Note: The frame of the 44 Mag. (SC1-414) and the 357 Mag. (SC1-324) cannot be fit with any other centerfire rifle barrel. They are capable of being fit with accessory shotgun barrels, but their rifle capability is limited to the specific 44 or 357 Mag. barrel that it is shipped on the gun.

So what does the big 2 stamped on the inside of receiver stand for?  If they only make 2 receivers SB1 and SB2, and you can get a SB1 combo with a .357 or .44mag, why can you not use either of those barrels on any post 99 SB1?  I am not trying to be difficult, I just must be as dumb as my wife says.

There have been all kinds of markings on the inside of frames over the years, basically they mean nothing to us, and H&R probably can't tell ya even if they knew, I don't think they even make them, the Ruger foundry made them at one time or another, may still be making them for all we know. Modern SB2 frames are heat treated investment cast alloy, SB1 frames are made totally different and not heat treated, that's all we can ascertain from talks with H&R CS, one look at the two side by side will show the unmistakable difference in them, see the pics in the FAQs. As stated on the accessory barrel page, rifle barrels won't be fitted to shotgun frames and the SB1 357 and 44 frames can't be fitted with any other rifle barrels, that's just the way it is, like it or not. ;)

I am not sure how much I care for the straight wood stock and 3inch .410 barrel.  What could I get for them if I decide to sell them?  I haven't seen either of those where anyone was selling them.

Thanks for any help
