17 HMR question?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:09:29 PM »
Got a chance to pickup a 17 HMR 23" SS barrel cheap. Can anyone tell me how the rim fire works on these?  Maybe a dumb question but for the life of me can't figure how it would hit rim instead of center punch. Maybe if I went and looked at one I could see how. I'd like to buy for a cheap plinking for grand kids to shoot.

Thanks for not laughing! ??? ???

If you have a Contender all you have to do is to move the selector on the hammer to the rimfire position.  There should be 3 positions; one for rimfire, one for centerfire, and a safe position where neither firing pin is hit.

I don't know about the Encore.

I've not actually seen one but I think on the Encore rimfires the bore is offset a bit from center of the barrel so that the firing pin hits the rim edge rather than center as it does on centerfire rounds.

I am not sure how cheap you think you can get 17 HMR for. It is costing in the $13/50 range if I buy the cheapest I can get. It is up $20/50 for the "good" stuff. Cheaper than center fire, but considerably more than run of the mill 22 Long Rifle ammo.

I don't know anything about the configuration GB posted about, but ever since the Encore first came out some custom 3rd party shops have made and sold a rimfire breech plug adapter for the Encore with an angled firing pin to shoot the rimfire cartridges.   With it installed in place of the factory breech plug  as many different rimfire barrels can be shot on that frame as wanted (22S/L/LR. 17HM2/17HMR, 5mm, etc).   But you do have to change out the plug back to the factory one to shoot centerfire on that frame again.

I don't pay ridiculous retail prices at most sporting shops.   Mail order 17HMR ammo can still be bought for about $9.50-11.00 per 50 from the cheaper to the so called premium brands, and the 17HM2 for about $5.50-$6.50 for the same.    Deals come up now and then too at even lower prices - couple of years ago I paid $4.50/50 for a couple of cases of HMR from a small shop in WA state, and later $7.00/50 from a shop in northern NV (took all they had).   Since I also bought several cases of both 17HMR and 17HM2 mail order back when they were still less than $8 and $5 respectively, they'll last me for years now that I don't shoot them like I used to.

I called the guy today who is selling barrel to find out wife said he is out of town till Thursday. Want the 17 over 22LR for grand kids to learn long range shooting at Prairie Dogs. You can sit on hill shoot for hours out to 200 yds. Buddy has a 17 HMR pretty impressive for shooting the little dogs. He picks up cases of ammo at gun shows for around $9.00 for a box of 50 cheap for a pretty good varmint load with better range than 22s

I would be putting it on an Encore frame web sight says 2 screws and a pin and it's a rim fire so off set is all I could think of just seems weird! ???

In the first post you said it is a 23" barrel and in the last post you said it will go on an Encore.  If this is a TC factory barrel, they do not make a 23" barrel for the Encore, it would be for the Contender only.  The barrels are not interchangable between the two so make sure it is for the correct frame before you buy it.  17HMR factory barrels for the Encore are either 24" or 28" unless it is a custom shop barrel or some other after market company.  I just thought I would mention that so you don't end up with a really expensive paper weight.

I'm pretty new to this Encore addiction started with wanting a muzzel loader at CHRISTmas! New Pro Hunter and 3 other pro hunter barrels and a used Encore frame later.

It seems like he probably made a mistake in his add.  Could possibly be a 24" barrel maybe.  And it could be an after market barrel too.  Its worth checking into because it sounds like a good price.

Bill is right. They used technogly from the TCR rifle and they use an off set mono block so the pin hits the side of the case. I want to add do not dry fire it as it will mess up the firing pin.
I also have a link to see if this helps.
