44 mag & 38-55 test run
« on: April 12, 2008, 04:35:15 PM »
Took the newest members of the family out to play today.  Shot the 44 first at 25 paces.  3 inches to the right and on line so took it out to 50 paces and did 2 more shots.  They made the prettiest clover leaf you could imagine! :o  Moved the sight and went to 75 paces and the darn thing was 1 inch high.  Left her there and started shooting at a couple of clay pigeons at twice that distance.  Two shots and broke it! ;D  I HAVE to put a scope on it to see how good she will will group.  My old eyes can't see the sights that good.  The thing has to have eyes all her own. ;)  Then the 38-55.  Not to bad with factory Winchester ammo.  Very mild and did OK.  Got it on at 75 paces, put some of my handloads in and  :o I have never seen such a perfect keyhole in my life!  That was 200 gr. Sierra on top of 33 gr of IMR 3031.  2 more shots and the same thing.  Had some 250 cast on top of the same charge and they sot some better, got a group of about 4-5 inches with them.  Went back to the factory load and finished off 2 boxes.  last 10 went into a group of about 3" tall and 2.5" wide.  One fl yer and then 2 separate groups, 5 in a string of 1.5" high and just wide enough to put 2 touching.  The other group was 4 in a line 1" tall and even narrower.  Will have to try some bigger cast bullets, hope I don't have to have the chamber reamed but will see.  Finished the 50 rounds of 44s just hitting rocks.  That one really put a smile on my face.  Is the stringing due to bedding on the fore stock?  Any thoughts?  ???

Glad to see it shoots well for yeah. As for the stringing, did the barrel get hot? They open up when they get hot.

The last 10 were shot over about a 6 minute period.  Barrel did get warm, but never real hot.  Guess I did rush it a bit but wanted to get an idea on what it would do with the slow factory loads that shot the best.  By the way, the rear sight is all the way up to put it 2" high at 75 paces.  Next ones out to play will be the 25-06 ultra thats new and the 45-70 that needs broke in.  Spent 8 hrs. shooting today.  High 70's and not to much wind.  Had a trailwalk thru the Ponderosa Pines with the 50 cal. TC Hawken, then back to the range with a 6.5x55.  It was a very good day! ;D  DP.
